A Funeral Service was held at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Depew, Iowa on Saturday, July 29, 2023
Pastor Kevin Weeks was the officiant and Violet was laid to rest at North St. John’s Lutheran Cemetery in Depew.
Violet Maxine Berkland, daughter of William and Myrtle (Egland) DeWall was born on the family farm west of Wallingford on September 26, 1929. She passed away on July 25, 2023, at the Spencer Hospital at the age of 93 years.
Violet was baptized at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Terril, Iowa. She attended country schools in the Terril Area. The family moved to the Fenton area where she graduated from Fenton High School. She was confirmed at St. John’s Lutheran Church of Depew, where she remained a member the rest of her life. On October 4, 1947, she was united in marriage to Melvin L. Berkland in Depew. The couple made their home on the Berkland Family farm, where they farmed and raised their two children. They moved to Emmetsburg in 2014.
Violet was an active member of St. John’s where she was a Circle member, held many offices in the ladies’ group, taught Sunday School, and sang in the choir. She enjoyed quilting, sewing, embroidery, cooking and baking. She was especially known for her “kringla” and entertaining friends and relatives. She was a dedicated farm wife.
Violet is survived by her children Marlin (Jo) Berkland of Plymouth, MN and Karen (Thomas) Hagen of Cylinder, IA; her grandchildren Aaron (Kelsey) Hagen of Worthington, MN, Adam (Elise) Berkland of Durham, NC, and Neko of Manhattan, NY; and 2 great-grandchildren, Helen Violet and George Stuart Berkland. She is also survived by her sister Shirley Kerber, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Violet is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Melvin, and sisters Jane Voigt and Doris Ruhnke.
