A Mass of Christian Burial for Shirley Fisher, age 88 of Windom, formerly of Curlew and Ayrshire, Iowa, was held on Wednesday, October 23rd at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Windom. Burial was at Calvary Cemetery in Ayrshire, Iowa.
In lieu of flowers and gifts, memorial donations are appreciated in Shirley's name to St Jude Children's Hospital or Shriners Children's.
On April 14, 1956, Shirley married William "Bill" Fisher at St Patrick's Catholic Church in Estherville. The marriage was blessed with five children, Cynthia, Steven, David, Paul and Daniel. She was a farm wife who not only took pride in raising her family but was also active on the farm. Shirley drove the tractors and the combine and she was one of the few women of her era that took a tractor and wagons to the elevator in town. She enjoyed tending her flower gardens and bird watching. Shirley helped Bill with the award-winning Llamas at the local fairs, shows and parades. She was often the announcer at the llama shows for many years.
Shirley was faithful and active in her community. She was involved in church circles in both Iowa and Minnesota and she served on various church boards. Shirley was the county chairperson for the Easter Seals Pony Express of Iowa for 10 years.
On October 15th, Shirley passed away peacefully at the Good Samaritan Society, Sogge memorial in Windom, where she had been a resident for several years.
She leaves behind one son, Steve (Wanda Nelson) Fisher of Spirit Lake, IA; three grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren; sisters, Margaret (Gene) Farrel of Paducah, KY and Mary Ann Strom of Spirit Lake, IA; sister-in-law , Dana O'Connor of Victoria, MN; as well as several nieces and nephews.
