Eldon Hurley

     Eldon Hurley, age 89, of Curlew, passed away on October 30, 2024 at the Palo Alto County Hospital in Emmetsburg.  Funeral services will be 2:30 pm on Saturday November 9th at the Lentz Funeral Home in Mallard.  Burial will be in Rush Lake Cemetery of Curlew, with military rites conducted by the Iowa Army National Guard Honor Guard and the Anderson-Eckert-Hersom American Legion Post #345 of Mallard.  Visitation will be 1:00 pm until service time on Saturday at the Lentz Funeral Home in Mallard. 

     Eldon Stantford Hurley, the son of Floyd and Zelda (Prentice) Hurley, was born on July 7, 1935 in Curlew, Iowa.  He graduated from Mallard High School in 1955.  Eldon served his country in the U.S. Army.  On November 20, 1960 Eldon was united in marriage with Carol Jean Backstrom at the Methodist Church in Ayrshire, Iowa.  Eldon farmed with his brother Burdette until his retirement. 

     Eldon enjoyed fishing for bullheads with his children and taking trips to Canada.  He also enjoyed woodworking in his spare time.  Eldon and Carol bought a camper and would take their family camping.  Later they had many camping trips with Wisconsin friends to Missouri.  They also spent a few winters in Texas.

     Left to cherish Eldon’s memory is his wife of 63 years, Carol; children, David Hurley of Curlew, Donna Hurley of Spencer and Daniel (Holly) Hurley of Reed Springs, MO; grandchildren, Torie Hurley, John Matheson and Allyson Ernst; great grandchildren, Caleb and Jaxon; brother, Frank Hurley of Versailles, MO; a sister, Relda (Ronald) Lathrop of Lincoln, NE; a sister-in-law, Ann Hurley of Emmetsburg; nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Don and Burdette Hurley; and sisters, Doris (Harold) Barnhardt and Leveta (Melvin) Barnhardt.
