Inurnment was at St. John's Catholic Cemetery, Emmetsburg.
Troy Joseph Satern, son of James George and Beverly Ann (Boblit) Satern, was born April 28, 1971 in Emmetsburg. He received his education in the Emmetsburg school system. After high school Troy attended Iowa Lakes Community College where he earned his welding certificate. Troy became known to his family and friends as “Bum” and that name stayed with him throughout his life.
Troy was employed at A.S.I. Tire, Emmetsburg Ford, Swanson’s Hardware and most recently Brand FX in Pocahontas. Bum also did bartending in Emmetsburg and quickly became everybody’s favorite bartender due to his humor, conversation and great drinks.
Bum’s circle of friends was large. It not only included people he had worked with and people he had worked for, but people he met at the dirt track auto races or those that he met while bowling. If Bum didn’t know someone when he arrived, he certainly did by the time he left.
Besides attending the races and going bowling, Bum loved playing video games, going fishing and having a cold beer with his friends.
Troy passed away Monday, Sept. 26, 2022 at his home in Emmetsburg, at the age of 51. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Bev Satern.
He is survived by his brothers, Tim (Becky) Satern of Aurora, CO and Tom (Pam) Satern of Hiawatha, IA; his sisters, Tami (Ron) Laue of Spencer, and Teri Van Ness of Spencer; nieces and nephews, Tanya (Bryan) Stelzriede, Trista (Ryan Goecker) Satern, Traci (Chris) Fields, Marissa (Stephen) Hoelscher, Noah (Janet) Satern, Faith Satern, Kali Laue, Josie Van Ness and Stephanie Van Ness; his aunt, Berniece Mansager of Eagle Bend, MN; as well as other relatives and many friends.
