Shirley Louise Loring, daughter of Roy and Ella Mae (Bruck) Beck, was born July 9, 1947 in Spencer, Iowa.  Shirley attended school in Ruthven, graduating from Ruthven High School in 1965.  Following graduation, Shirley continued her education in Minneapolis where she received her degree as a Lab and X-Ray Technician.  After returning to Emmetsburg, Shirley was employed with three local physicians as a Lab and X-Ray Tech for many years.

On November 29, 1969 Shirley was united in  marriage to Francis “Frank” Loring at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Emmetsburg.  They were blessed with a daughter, Janelle and a son, Michael.  Frank and Shirley made their home in Emmetsburg where they raised their family.  In November Frank and Shirley had the joy of celebrating 55 years of marriage.

Shirley later began working at Lakeside Lutheran Home as a C.N.A.  She spent her entire working career in healthcare.

As a young girl, Shirley’s parents got her a piano which she learned to play beautifully.  She loved playing the piano and  singing and was very active in music during high school playing and singing at many school events.  She also played at her church.  Shirley was active in 4-H and received many blue ribbons at the local and state levels for her breads and rolls.  This interest and love of baking continued on throughout her life as she baked and cooked delicious items for her family and friends.  She looked forward to decorating and entertaining for the holidays.

Shirley enjoyed playing Bingo at the V.F.W. and purchasing Iowa scratch tickets, and had the fun of winning a large lottery prize.  She was an avid sports fan, cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and attending the E’Hawks games with her son, Mike.  Shirley and Frank loved gardening, having gorgeous flowers each summer around their home and caring for their cats.  Shirley enjoyed sewing and often made Janelle’s clothes when she was young.

Shirley passed away Monday, January 13, 2025 at the Emmetsburg Care Center at the age of 77.  She was preceded in death by her parents, Roy and Ella Mae Beck; her aunt Margie Bruck; and grandfather, George Beck and Papa Bruck.

She is survived by her husband, Frank Loring of Emmetsburg, Iowa; her daughter, Janelle Loring of Spencer, Iowa; her son, Mike Loring of Emmetsburg, Iowa; a grandson, Timothy Godinez Loring of Nevada; a cousin, Linda LaPointe of Arkansas; as well as other relatives and many friends.
