A Mass of Christian Burial for Shirley A. Eagan of Emmetsburg was held Wednesday, Sept. 14, at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. Celebrant was the Rev. Bill Schreiber.
Shirley Ann Eagan, daughter of Raymond and Florence Saeugling, was born April 9, 1931, on a family farm outside of Guttenberg. In the early 1940s, Shirley and her family moved to Ruthven, where her father (a railroad telegrapher and depot agent) had been transferred by the Chicago & Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad.
On Oct. 20, 1956, Shirley was united in marriage to Richard Leroy Eagan at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ruthven. To this union five children were born. The couple eventually made their permanent home in Emmetsburg.
Shirley was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She made everyone feel welcome in her home and became a second mother to many of her children's friends, over the years.
Shirley worked outside of their home, too. She was a Teacher’s Aid at Emmetsburg’s “Little Red” school for Special Education Students for nearly 20 years.
She also had jobs as a bartender / waitress at the Emmetsburg Golf Course and Hamilton’s Lounge. Shirley was also a Class Room Prompter for Iowa Lakes Community College, prior to her retirement.
Shirley was a prolific vocalist in her youth and had a life-long love for singing and music, in general. This was a passion of hers and she passed her appreciation for music and for ALL of the arts, onto her children and grandchildren.
Shirley passed away on the evening of Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2022 at Emmetsburg’s Lakeside Lutheran nursing home. She was preceded in death by her parents, her three siblings, and by her husband Richard, in 2013.
She is survived by her Children and Grandchildren, Mary Anita Eagan of North Liberty, Patrick & (Karen) Eagan of Mineral Point, WI, their children, Matthew Eagan, Molly and (Mandie) Eagan, and Mary Kate and (Joe) Holter, Timothy & (Dianne) Eagan of Spencer, their children, Colin and (Abby) & Claire Eagan, Marcia and (Michael) Black of Marion, IA, their children, Grace and Gunnar Black, and Keyron Paul Eagan of Ahwatukee, AZ, as well as many other relatives and numerous friends.
Shirley Ann Eagan will be dearly missed as she touched the lives of many people.
