Visitation for Phyllis Carpenter will be held from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. on Sunday, September 14, 2025 at Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, September 15 at Grace Church in Emmetsburg.
Interment is at Rush Lake Cemetery in Curlew, Iowa.
Phyllis Elaine Carpenter, age 90, passed away on September 3rd, 2025, at Friendship Haven in Fort Dodge, Iowa.
Phyllis was born on December 31st, 1934, in Ruthven, Iowa, to Arley and Viola Barringer. She attended school in Ruthven, and then attended Northwest Bible School in Minneapolis, Minnesota. While in college, Phyllis worked for the Douglas Company, where she became known as the “All-American Girl” for her ability to do almost any task required. She left college to clerk for her father, Representative Arley Barringer, at the Iowa Statehouse in 1957.
Phyllis was married to Raymond Carpenter of Mallard, Iowa, on March 1st, 1958. She raised nine children on a farm near Mallard. She also worked at PARC Hall in Emmetsburg, Iowa, as a CNA and then as Activity Director.
Phyllis’ faith in Jesus Christ as her Savior was very important to her. She attended the First Baptist Church in Curlew, Iowa, starting as a teenager and attending throughout the majority of her life; later attending Grace Baptist Church in Emmetsburg, and then the Baptist Church of Pocahontas, Iowa. She lived her faith by serving as the teacher of the KYB club on Sunday evenings and by working with Child Evangelism Fellowship.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Raymond, her sister Beverly, her brother Kevin, and her daughter, Leisha. She is survived by eight children: Les (Tammy), Lauren, Leanne, Lindy, LaVern (Patricia), Lynell (Tim), Lee (Emily) and Lenard; 26 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lanny and Donny; and six sisters, Arletta, Fern, Esther, Lucille, Velora, and Janita.
