With the state championship set for June, trapshooting competition would heat up for the final League shooting events last week. On Wednesday, May 19, the Emmetsburg Hot Shots JV and Varsity squads would compete in Algona. Both squads would see strong individual performances from their athletes.
Hot Shots Team Bravery, the Senior Varsity trapshooting squad, would earn a third place finish with a score of 219, just four targets out of first place. Both Carson Hoffman and Derek Lawson would lead Team Bravery with 46, while Matt Berkland would score 45, Aurora Peters 43, and Tyler Stokes 39.
Taking fourth place overall with a score of 212 would be Hot Shots Team Justice, the Senior JV squad. Tate Joyce would lead the squad with a score of 47, with Hunter Grothaus picking up 45, both Anika Stearns and Jacob Grau-West 41, and Garret Franker scoring 38.
Joyce would finish in second place overall for the boys. Lawson and Hoffman would tie for third, with Lawson winning the tie-breaker for the bronze.
Perfect rounds of 25 would be recorded by Grothaus, Lawson, and Hoffman at the event.
In the girls individual rankings, Peters would land in a three-way tie for first at 43, finishing the day in third place following the reverse run tie-breaker. Peters would be followed by Stearns in fourth with 41, Elyssa Flannegan in fifth with 40, and Lacey Olson in sixth with a score of 40.
The Hot Shots would also compete over the weekend, with shoots in Algona Saturday morning and Ruthven in the afternoon. Results will be available in Thursday’s The Democrat.
