A Prayer Service for Dawn Freeman will be held at 5:00 P.M. on Thursday, February 20, 2025, at Martin-Mattice Funeral Home in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Visitation will be from 4:00 P.M. until the service begins.
Inurnment will be held at a later date at Evergreen Cemetery in Emmetsburg, Iowa.
Dawn Marie Freeman, daughter of George D. and Grace (Ferguson) Freeman, was born April 5, 1938 in Estherville, Iowa. She received her education in Emmetsburg, graduating from Emmetsburg High School. Dawn continued her education at Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa and received her Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Dawn taught Kindergarten in Ayrshire.
In 1960 Dawn was united in marriage to Gerald “Jerry” Hofstad. They were blessed with two daughters, Kay and Tami. Dawn helped Jerry at the Emmetsburg Publishing Company for several years.
Dawn was a faithful member of Bethany Lutheran Church, helping in many capacities. She looked forward to helping with the Scandinavian Tea each year. She also enjoyed the church quilting group which she participated in, making quilts that were donated for various fund raiser or for those in need. Dawn was an avid Bridge player and belonged to Bridge Club. She loved gardening and yardwork and was active in the Garden Club. Her yard and lakefront was always immaculate.
Dawn passed away Saturday, February 15, 2025 at the Emmetsburg Care Center, at the age of 86. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Grace Freeman; son-in-law, John Walden; sisters, Jeanine Spies, Corrine Ashby and Linda Berkland; brothers-in-law, Roger Berkland and Ron Mullen.
She is survived by her daughters, Kay Hofstad Swalve (Larry) of Cylinder, Iowa and Tami Walden (Ken Willis) of Carpenter, Wyoming; five grandchildren, Jerri Soukup (Kirby), Colyn Johnson (Anna), Jayden Johnson (Tyson Kruse), Stephanie Johnson (Joe), and Bryon Swalve (Amber); five great grandchildren, Hallie, Hank, Jack, Brigston, and Delaney; brother, George Freeman of Sallisaw, Oklahoma; sister, Judy Mullen of Emmetsburg, Iowa; brothers-in-law, John Spies of Emmetsburg, Iowa and Jack Ashby of Iowa City, Iowa; several nieces and nephews; as well as many other relatives and friends.
