Funeral service for Curt Berkland was held Tuesday, Feb. 14 at First Baptist Church in Spencer. The Rev. Curt Batschelet officiated.
Curtis Berkland, son of Eugene and Justine Joan (Mosher) Berkland, was born Dec. 14, 1963 in Emmetsburg. He received his education in Ruthven, graduating from Ruthven High School in 1982. Following graduation, Curt continued his education at Iowa State University where he studied Farm Operations. Curt then attended Iowa Lakes Community College where he earned his degree in Farm Equipment Mechanics in 1985.
On March 27, 1993, Curt was united in marriage to Lisa Kay Gross at Lost Island Lutheran Church near Ruthven. They were blessed with a daughter, Mackenzie and a son, Matt.
Farming was Curt’s life. Being a good steward of the land he farmed was important to Curt. He served on the Palo Alto County Soil and Water Conservation Board for several years advocating for responsible farming, preserving the land in the best way possible.
Curt had been a leader for the 4-H Shooting Sports and was a Lost Island Township Trustee. He also served on the Ruthven Fire Agency.
Curt’s faith was very important to him, serving in many capacities at Lost Island Lutheran Church, during his youth and young adulthood and currently being a devoted member at First Baptist Church in Spencer. He was always willing to lend a hand wherever he could be helpful.
Curt loved watching Iowa State football and men’s basketball. He cherished every opportunity to spend time with his family and had a great appreciation for all of God’s creations.
Curt passed away Saturday, Feb. 11, 2023 at his home near Ruthven at the age of 59. He was preceded in death by his mother, Justine “Joan” Berkland.
He is survived by his wife and children, Lisa, Mackenzie and Matt, all of Ruthven; his father, Eugene “Gene” Berkland of Ruthven; a brother, Dan (Loretta) Berkland of Sibley, Iowa; a sister, Lori (Bob) Calkins of East Chain, Minnesota; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Roger and Joanne Gross of Jefferson, Wisconsin; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Lucy and Rick Bergman of Lake Geneva, Wisconsin and Sue and Brad Meng of Cottage Grove, Wisconsin; as well as numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, aunts and uncles; and many friends.
