Funeral services for 98 year old Robert Kane will be held Friday, April 26, 2024 at 11:00 A.M. at Holy Family Catholic Church in Emmetsburg, Iowa. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:00 before the service.

Inurnment will be at St. John’s Catholic Cemetery in Emmetsburg, Iowa.

Robert “Bob” Francis Kane, son of James and Marie (Martini) Kane, was born December 3, 1925 in Cylinder, Iowa. Bob began his education in country school near Cylinder and graduated from Cylinder High School.  Following graduation, he attended the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

Bob enlisted in the United States Army on March 29, 1946. He completed his basic training in Washington and later served overseas. During his time in the service, he was awarded the World War II Victory Medal as well as the US Army Occupation Medal for his time serving in Japan after the war. Bob obtained the rank of Sergeant and was honorably discharged on September 8, 1947.

Following his years in the service, Bob was employed as a sales professional for the Diamond Crystal Salt Company. He was promoted to district manager, regional manager, and national account manager. His career in the salt business spanned over 40 years in Iowa, Minnesota, Michigan, New Jersey, Kentucky, and Illinois. He retired from his working life in September of 1988.

Bob lived a rich and full life and was loved by his family, friends and neighbors. He was a faithful, devout Catholic and supported his church. He loved gardening and enjoyed giving the ‘fruits of his labor’ to his neighbors.

He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing and hunting. Two of his most memorable trips were a hunting trip to Montana and fishing in Alaska. Bob attended several Kentucky Derbies as well as many Detroit Lions football games while his cousin, Rick Kane, was on the field. Bob enjoyed traveling during his retirement years, visiting over 20 different countries in Europe and Asia.

In 2023, Bob moved to Iowa to live closer to his niece, Kris Snavely. Bob passed away Thursday, March 14, 2024 in Sioux City, Iowa at the age of 98. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Leo (Phyllis) Kane and Joseph Kane; and sister, Jeannine (Ronald) Snavely.

He is survived by his sister-in-law, Mary Kane; niece, Kris Snavely; longtime friends, Mark (Maribeth) Ruth family, Danny (Kathy) Smith family, Bob (Pat) Merkel, Clement Santi, Bill Brennan, Chris O’Toole family, and Lee (Brandy) Snider; nephew, Marc Snavely; and nieces, Therese Duhn, Ginger Hoffman, and Sherrie Meints.
