Jim died peacefully on May 26, at Clarissa C. Cook Hospice House, Bettendorf, surrounded by family.
James Thomas Hughes was born on March 7, 1960 in Emmetsburg, the youngest of the six children of Charles (Chuck) and Kathleen (Kay) Hughes. He graduated from Emmetsburg schools and the University of Iowa. Jim had many adventures in the US and abroad before returning to the Midwest. At a chance meeting in St Paul, Minnesota in the summer of 1994, Jim met Laurie Langel. They were married on August 19, 1995.
Jim was a man of many interests; he loved adventure, woodworking and making jam, but most importantly he loved his family.
He is survived by his wife Laurie, his children Michael, Elizabeth and Thomas; his siblings and their spouses Julie (David) Nodland, Peter Hughes, Mary Beth (Randy) Newby, Rev Brian Hughes; and Sheila Hughes; his mother-in-law Doris Langel, Laurie's five siblings and spouses; and many nieces and nephews. Jim was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, Mel Langel. May they rest in peace.
The family would like to thank Genesis Hospice and the University of Iowa Cancer Center for all of the compassionate and loving care they shared with Jim.
Memorials may be made to the family or you can honor Jim’s memory by planting a tree.
