Dorothy Janice Cast was born on March 3, 1934, on a farm near Havelock, Iowa to Fred and Dorothy (Youngreen) Goodchild. Jan attended country school until 1946 and then continued her education at Mallard Community School, graduating in 1952. One of her fondest high school memories was playing in the Girls’ State Basketball tournaments in 1950 and 1952.
After graduating from high school, Jan attended Buena Vista College and earned her elementary teaching degree. In 1955, during her first year of teaching in West Bend, Jan met a very handsome young man from Rush Springs, Oklahoma who was also in his first year as a vocational agriculture instructor for the same district. One could say it was love at first sight. On June 24, 1956, Jan married the love of her life, Robert H. Cast, in Mallard. Jan and Bob became an amazing team, raising seven great kids. Along with being an exceptional mom, Jan was Bob’s right hand “man” and became very involved in every aspect of his life. Together they initiated the FFA chili and oyster supper, which is still going strong today. She was fondly referred to as “Momma Cast” by many of Bob’s students. Because of her dedication, Jan was named the first-ever FFA Mother of the Year. She was also awarded an Honorary Chapter Farmer Degree, was a charter member of the local Alumni FFA Association, and was a life member of the National FFA Alumni Association. During her teaching career, Jan made a huge impact on the lives of many students. She taught kindergarten in Rolfe, Iowa and kindergarten and 4th grade in West Bend. Jan was also a library associate for the West Bend-Mallard Community School for 17 years before retiring in 2008.
As a lifelong and active member of the West Bend United Methodist Church, Jan had a close relationship with Jesus. It was this strong faith that allowed her to have such a positive outlook on life, even with the many difficult obstacles she faced in her 88 years.
Some of Jan’s favorite things to do were having coffee at the Villager, tending to her flowers, gardening, baking, and above all, doing special things with and for her family and friends. Jan will always be remembered for her attention to detail, sense of humor, compassion, and her unwavering dedication to her faith, family, and friends.
Left to treasure her memory are her children: Evelyn (Orv) Otten, Lori (Steve) Baade, Julie (Bill) Freking, Mary (Steve) Banwart, Robert (Robin) Cast, and Mike (Mya) Cast; son-in-law, Bill Bramely; grandchildren: Amy Otten, Tony (Mary) Otten, Greg (Kerrie) Otten, Emily (Jesse) Fenske, Sarah (John) Williams, Ryan Baade, Matthew Weir, Mandy (Josh) Frey, Andrea (Jakob) Parmley, Austin (Bri) Bramley, Bruce (Alex) Anliker, Nick (Marti) Anliker, Kristin (Ryan) Anliker, Haley Freking, Kya Freking, Andy (Jenn) Banwart, Allison (Rob) Schneider, Mitch Banwart, Jacob (Leanna) Banwart, Mackenzie Cast, Trevor Cast, Jayce Cast, Trey Cast, and Josie Cast; 30 great grandchildren; sisters, Joy Lettow and Judy (Tom) Blome; brother, Lonnie Goodchild; numerous nieces and nephews; her very special pet, Miss Kitty; and many dear friends.
