Hawkettes Heading to Des Moines
by Joseph Schany
The Emmetsburg Hawkette Dance Team will hit the road next week to compete in the 2021 Iowa State Dance & Drill Team Association (ISDTA) State Championships at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
“The girls have been practicing 3+ days a week starting the beginning of August,” said Coach Stacy Nachreiner. “Although our season has not gone as planned due to COVID, the girls have done a great job adjusting to the changes.”
Changes to the ISDTA rules were set in place this year to keep teams safe during the pandemic, including being six feet apart throughout routines, no exchanging of poms or other props, and no contact between dancers at any point during their routine. The competition was also moved up three weeks earlier from past years.
“With these rules in place the girls made the group decision to put all their focus into their Pom routine,” said Nachreiner. “In preparation for state, not only have we spent hours drilling and cleaning our routines, we have also spent time making sure all our formations are socially distanced, and the girls have been in charge of their own equipment to be sure there is no sharing.”
The 2021 ISDTA State Championships run from Nov. 17 through Nov. 19 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines and will feature the high school team championships, college championships, and solo championships.
The Hawkettes will perform their Pom routine to “HandClap” by Fitz and the Tantrums on Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 6:00 p.m.
The event is open to the public and masks will be required. The championships will also be live streamed or available via digital file access. For more information, visit www.isdtalive.com.
