E-Hawks Manhandle Knights in 42-14 Victory
by Joseph Schany
Another dominating performance by the Emmetsburg E-Hawks would spell all the difference in Friday’s 42-14 second round playoff victory over the Carroll Kuemper Knights. The E-Hawks would contain the Knights on both sides of the ball, allowing just one rushing yard and forcing two turnovers defensively, while picking up key blocks offensively to gain 408 total yards of offense.
Emmetsburg would find the end zone on their first two possessions of the game. Following a quick three and out by the Knights to open the contest, a Lex Kassel punt return would start the E-Hawks off at midfield. The Cole Shirk/Colby Weir dual running attack would be on full display as the pair took turns picking up first down on quarterback Ben Dunlap hand offs, driving the ball to the Knight 4-yard line. On 2nd & goal, Dunlap would keep the ball and find the end zone for a touchdown. Cade Jacobson would tack on the point after kick to give Emmetsburg the 7-0 lead. Jacobson would be perfect on the night.
The next E-Hawk possession would again see Shirk and Weir trade runs, with Lane Auten finding positive yards as well. Driving the ball from the Knight 40-yard line, Emmetsburg would march 39 yards in six plays, where Weir would score on a 1-yard dash with 2:25 to go in the first quarter.
Carroll Kuemper would find some offensive success in the second quarter, picking up a score after a 17-yard touchdown run to bring the game within seven. However, the E-Hawks would answer on the very next drive. After first down runs from Shirk and Weir would bring the ball to midfield, a 25-yard Dunlap pass to Kassel would be followed by an Auten 35-yard touchdown run.
As time ticked down in the half, an E-Hawk defensive stand would force a Knight punt on 4th & 3. With 1:44 before the break, Emmestburg would put together another scoring drive, seeing Auten pick up a 30-yard first down run followed by a Dunlap pass to Matt Wirtz for the 31-yard touchdown.
The E-Hawks would enter halftime up 28-7.
The third quarter would be all Emmetsburg. A 3rd & 9 Dunlap pass to Ryan Brennan for a 75-yard touchdown would open up the second half of play. The E-Hawk defense would then force a turnover two plays later, with Shirk picking off a Knight pass and carrying the ball to midfield. The subsequent offensive possession would see the E-Hawks drive to the 8-yard line where Shirk would run in for the score.
