Lady E-Hawks Fall in Regional Final
by Joseph Schany
MANLY — Despite a strong effort from Emmetsburg’s Lady E-Hawks, a fifth inning Central Springs grand slam home run would spell the difference in a 4-1 Class 2A Regional Championship loss Monday night.
The Lady E-Hawks finish a season shortened by the COVID-19 pandemic with a respectable 13-3 record overall.
“I thought the girls played extremely well in the regional final,” said Travis Birkey, Lady E-Hawk Softball Head Coach.
Emmetsburg would record six hits to Central Springs’s three on the night.
Cheyanne Fries would lead the girls with two hits, including a bunt in the third inning and another in the fifth.
A Raegen Swanson burner to left field in the fifth inning would advance Fries to second, and a Molly Schany hard grounder to right field would send Fries sliding in to home for Emmetsburg’s only point in the contest.
Abbie Schany and Lindsay Carter would also collect a hit each during the game.
In the pitcher’s circle, Carter allowed just three Central Springs hits, while striking out three.
“Over the last couple of weeks the girls were playing with confidence in all aspect of the game,” said Birkey. “They were focused and ready to play every night. Give our girls credit for playing during this COVID time – we were happy to have the opportunity to play.”
The Lady E-Hawks will lose three strong senior athletes in Molly Schany, Carter, and Fries.
“The program loses three great athletes that have shown leadership over the past five years,” added Coach Birkey.
“I wish them the best of luck in their new adventures.”
