Trap Shooters Compete in Regional Competition
ACKLEY – On Saturday, June 20, seven athletes from the Emmetsburg Hot Shots Trap Shooting Team competed in a Regional Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP) competition at Stockdale Gun Club in Ackley, Iowa. Five high school athletes comprised a team that placed 14th out of 50 squads, while two middle school athletes competed as individuals.
During the four rounds of 25 targets (for a total possible score of 100) three athletes achieved a perfect score of 25 out of 25. High school athletes receiving award patches for their perfect score were Drake Jones of Rolfe and Derek Lawson of Emmetsburg. In the middle school division, Ashton Peters of Whittemore shot her first ever 25 of 25 for her first SCTP 25 patch. Perfect scores are particularly impressive this year since the regular SCTP and Hot Shots season was cancelled this spring due to COVID-19 restrictions and athletes had limited opportunities to practice and compete elsewhere.
Non-scholastic competitions are, nonetheless, being scheduled over the next month, with a competition yesterday (July 12) in Ruthven and upcoming competitions in Estherville on Saturday, August 1, and Emmetsburg/Cylinder on Saturday, August 15, an Iowa Games competition.
A new incentive for the remainder of this year features youth team scores to be recorded and totaled with the top team receiving a traveling trophy to be displayed until the next competition. All of these shoots are open to the public and both youth and adults are encouraged to participate.
The Emmetsburg Hot Shots would like to thank any and all supporters of the Hot Shots this year who contributed sponsorships and financial support for the Team. Since there was no season this year, sponsorships will be retained and applied to the group’s expenses next year. A list of sponsors will be publicized at that time.
