The Emmetsburg E-Hawk football team faced some very tough competition during the 2019 season. Nowhere has that been more apparent than when following Emmetsburg’s competitors in the postseason.

Week One of the playoffs on Friday, Nov. 1 saw four of Emmetsburg’s toughest opponents win big. In Class 2A, Algona beat Central Lyon 35-14 in a game eerily similar to Emmetsburg’s own 14-34 loss to the Bulldogs.

In Class 1A, West Lyon dominated Osage in a 55-14 win and West Sioux took down Underwood, 42-7. The E-Hawks fell in a 43-0 shutout to West Lyon in late September and a 41-19 setback against West Sioux on Oct. 25.

West Hancock beat IKM-Manning in a 27-0 shutout in Class A. The E-Hawks faced the Eagles on Sep. 6 and fell in a hard fought 41-13 contest.

Week Two, on Friday, Nov. 8, saw the Algona Bulldogs dismantle Greene County in a 48-15 Class 2A win.

In Class 1A, West Lyon beat Dike-New Hartford 36-14 and West Sioux won over Treynor, 41-24.

Class A would again see West Hancock victorious in a 43-0 stomping of South O’Brien.

Week Three, taking place on Friday, Nov. 15 and Saturday, Nov. 16, saw Algona fall to Odebolt Arthur Battle Creek Ida Grove (OABCIG) 32-41 in Class 2A. OABCIG would go on to win the Class 2A State Championship.

In Class 1A, West Lyon brought down West Sioux in a 26-21 battle and Class A would see West Hancock best Woodbury Central in a 49-20 victory.

The 2019 State Championship at the UNI Dome on Thursday, Nov. 21 and Friday, Nov. 22 would see both West Lyon and West Hancock take the title. In Class 1A, West Lyon beat Inwood in a 50-14 stomping while West Hancock brought down Grundy Center in a close 21-17 contest. Both teams deserve their titles and have performed well all season long.
