The year was 1991. A group of young women braved a blizzard to travel to Des Moines and the Big Barn to defy the odds and bring home a State Championship in six-on-six basketball to Emmetsburg. This Friday night, that team will return to their roots for a reunion and a chance to relive the glory days of girls’ six-on-six basketball.

As part of the 2018 St. Patrick’s Day celebration, a reunion of the 1991 Emmetsburg Lady E-Hawks State Championship team is planned for 5 p.m. in the EHS?Gym. As part of the event, a couple of special scrimmage games are being planned, including a throwback scrimmage of the 1991 players as they re-create the game that was one of Iowa’s signature events – Six-on-Six half girls basketball.

The evening’s event will begin at 4:15 p.m. with tours of the school facilities, followed at 5:00 p.m. with a group photo session. Introductions of the players will follow and after a special presentation to former Lady E-Hawk Coach Ted Riley at 5:10 p.m., Coaches Ted Riley and Assistant Coach Doug Cottington of the 1991 team will make a few remarks.

The action will start on the hardwood of the EHS?gym at 5:25 with the “Five on Five Classic” a contest featuring Riley’s last team against the 2018 Lady E-Hawks, coached by Riley alumnus Annie (Burdorf) Fiene.

A second “Five on Five Classic”?will follow, with the players being intermixed together to create two teams.

At 5:50 p.m., the members of the 1991 State Championship Team will be introduced and the evening’s highlight will follow at 6:00 p.m., the “Six on Six Classic”, with the 1991 team taking on a team of former players coached by Riley.

A live benefit auction will follow at 6:30 p.m. and a Silent Auction that begins at 5 p.m. will close at 6:45 p.m.

The public is encouraged and invited to come out Friday evening to relive the golden age of basketball as part of St. Pat’s Weekend.
