E-Hawks, Titans Falter In Regional Team Duals
EMMETSBURG – The hopes of the Emmetsburg E-Hawks and the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Titans for a berth in the 2018 State Dual Team Wrestling Tournament were dashed Tuesday night. The Titans would be eliminated in a one-point heartbreaking loss to West Sioux of Hawarden. For the Emmetsburg E-Hawks, a win over West Lyon would be followed by a tough loss to West Sioux to dash the hopes for the trip to Des Moines next week.
Emmetsburg would meet up with West Lyon in their dual, with the E-Hawks collecting a 46-24 win over the Wildcats.
Starting at 113 pounds, the E-Hawks’ Sean Brennan would earn a 12-1 Major Decision win over Korey Knobloch, but at 120 pounds, Christian Nichols lost a 3-2 decision to Isaac Bruggeman. Levi Aldous would earn a 5:39 win by fall over Kyler Grems to put the E-Hawks up 10-3 after the 126 pound match and at 132, Ethan Berven collected a 5:00 win by fall over Johnny Perez.
At 138 pounds, Spencer Griffin earned a 9-4 decision win over William Kooi and at 145, Bret Hoyman won an 11-8 decision over Stefan VanBeek to put Emmetsburg up 22-3 before Mason Griffin received a win by forfeit at 152 pounds.
Jackson Knight would be pinned in 4:32 by Payton Klarenbeek at 160 pounds but at 170, Jon Lace earned a 2:27 win by fall over Zach Hamann. Nick Schany would earn a 3:13 win by fall over Levi Metzger in the 182 pound match but at 195, Jordan Anderson was pinned in 1:41 by Trevor Van Whye.
At 220 pounds, Jimmie Steffens was pinned in :58 by Monte Pottebaum and at 285, Evan Brennan lost a 9-4 decision to Tommy Roemaen before Kelly Griffin claimed a 3:29 win by fall over Jose Richarz to give the E-Hawks the 46-24 win and advancement to the final dual.
On the adjacent mat, Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire squared off with West Sioux of Hawarden in a back and forth battle.
West Sioux’s Adam Allard opened the dual with a win by forfeit at 113 pounds. The Titans’ Monte Matthews would lose a 17-3 Major Decision to Dillon Lynott in the 120 pound match and Brock Grimm lost an 8-4 decision to Seth Salker at 126 pounds as the Titans trailed 13-0.
Connor Jensen would lose a 12-6 decision to Saul Ortiz in action at 132 pounds, but at 138 pounds, the Titans’ Lucas Hoffman earned a 5-1 decision for the first points of the dual.
At 145 pounds, Kolton Roth received a win by forfeit to make the score 9-16 in favor of the Falcons.
Blake Schany would be pinned in 3:14 by Kory VanOort in the 152 pound match, but the Titans came roaring back after that.
A 160 pounds, Spencer Roth earned a 5-4 decision over Trevor Schuller and Treyton Cacek would collect a 1:51 win by fall over Neddy Montes in the 170 pound match. At 182 pounds, Blake Miller earned a 10-8 decision win over Brian Duenas and Carter Murray scored a 1:02 win by fall in the 195 pound match over Kyler Bak to make the scored 27-22 as the Titans took the lead for the first time in the dual.
But at 220 pounds, Cade Steelman was pinned in 1:22 by Wyatt Johnson for a 27-28 score. Kyle Rehm would be pinned in :28 by Darlyn Marquez in the 285 pound match to put West Sioux up 34-27, but at 106, the Titans’ Cade Stearns came away with a 3:32 win by fall over Gilberto Armenta for the 33-34 final tally and heartbreaking loss.
The final dual would pit Emmetsburg against West Sioux with action starting at 120 pounds. The E-Hawks’ Christian Nichols would be pinned in 3:13 by Dillon Lynott and Seth Salker would earn a 2-0 decision over Levi Aldous in the 126 pound match as the Falcons took an early 9-0 lead.
But at 132 pounds, Ethan Berven got the E-Hawks on the scoreboard with a :26 win by fall over Saul?Ortiz and Spencer Griffin would score a 5:14 win by fall oer Brandon Schuller in the 138 pound match to put Emmetsburg up 12-9.
At 145 pounds, Brad Wirtz would be pinned in 1:35 by Kory VanOort, but Bret Hoyman earned a 3:26 win by fall over Jeshua Cervantes in the 152 pound match for an 18-15 E-Hawk lead.
At 160 pounds, Mason Griffin came away with a 15-2 Major Decision win over Bryan Hernandez, but at 170 pounds, Jackson Knight was pinned in 2:24 of his match with Trevor Schuller.
The 182 pound match saw West Sioux retake the lead after Jon Lace came up short in an 11-7 decision at the hands of Neddy Montes for a 24-22 score.
Nick Schany would battle hard in the 195 pound match but was pinned in 3:03 by Kyler Bak for a 30-22 lead. But at 220 pounds, Jimmie Steffens came away with a big rally to earn a 3:44 win by fall over Wyatt Johnson for a 30-28 score.
Evan Brennan would fall victim to a 1:04 pin at the hands of Darlyn Marquez in the 285 pound match for a 36-28 tally, but at 106 pounds, Kelly Griffin scored a 19-3 Technical Fall in 4:47 of his match with Gilberto Armenta to cut the deficit to 36-33, but the Falcons would earn the qualification to the State Duals when Sean Brennan was pinned in :27 by Adam Allard to conclude the dual with the 42-33 final score.
