E-Hawks Wrestle Well At Humboldt Invitational
HUMBOLDT – In their second night of action of the season, Emmetsburg’s E-Hawks collected two individual championships at the Joe Fitch Invitational at Humboldt Friday night.
Emmetsburg got titles from Spencer Griffin and Jimmie Steffens to lead an effort that also collected second place finishes from Ethan Berven, Kelly Griffin, Mason Griffin and Christian Nichols.
At 138 pounds, Spencer Griffin earned a 6-3 decision win in his first match and a :27 win by fall along with a :47 win by fall before earning the title by pinning Thomas Melohn of Pocahontas Area in :13 to win the championship.
Wrestling at 220 pounds, Jimmie Steffens earned falls in :50 and 1:20 in his first two matches before winning a 5-3 decision in the third round to set up his championship match. Steffens would win the title with a 9-2 decision victory over Jonah Dacken of Sheldon/South O’Brien.
Kelly Griffin finished second overall at 113 pounds, as he scored a :37 win by fall and then took a 2-0 decision before earning a 5:17 win by fall. But in the championship match, Griffin would be pinned by Aybren Moore of Atlantic-CAM to place second.
Christian Nichols would earn falls in 2:45, 2:18 and 3:18 in his first three matches, but would lose a 6-4 decision to Carsten Craven of Humboldt to finish as the runner-up at 120 pounds.
Ethan Berven earned second place at 132 pounds as he earned falls in 2:17 and 1:08 before winning a 10-4 decision, only to come up short in a 6-1 decision loss to Chase McLaren of Atlantic-CAM to settle for second place.
In action at 152 pounds, Mason Griffin scored an opening round :41 win by fall and then took an 8-3 decision and a 5-3 decision before he would be the victim of a 4:56 fall at the hands of Joey Busse of Humboldt to settle for second place.
Bret Hoyman finished third at 145 pounds, as he lost a 6-3 decision but earned a 3:40 win by fall before scoring a 9-1 Major Decision and then won the consolation match with a 3-1 Sudden Victory decision over Colton Mudd of Atlantic-CAM.
Jon Lace II?earned third place at 170 pounds after he was pinned in 2:25, but scored falls in 1:15 and 1:58 before pinning Chad Martin of Carroll Kuemper in 1:00 to take third place.
Nick Schany would claim third place at 192 pounds after an opening round loss by a pin in 5:09. Schany then scored falls in 1:12 and :56 before pinning Ryan Sterler of Sheldon/South O’Brien for third place.
Levi Aldous placed fourth at 126 pounds after a bye and a 7-5 decision loss, but got a 4:36 win by fall, only to lose an 11-3 Major Decision to Colin Mullenix of Atlantic-CAM to place fourth.
Zach Yates wrestled at 160 pounds and finished fourth after losing a 13-3 Major Decision, but winning pins in 2:51 and 1:20 before being pinned in 2:53 by Logan Moser of Humboldt to finish fourth.
Evan Brennan would finish in fifth place at 285 pounds, along with Brad Wirtz at 145 pounds. Kaleb Schleisman finished sixth at 170 while Colton Anderson was sixth at 138 pounds.
Andrew Walker would earn an eighth place finish for the E-Hawks at 132 pounds to wrap up the placings.
