E-Hawks Battle Hard In Season Opener
Emmetsburg’s E-Hawks played with fire and passion in their season opener Friday against Spencer, but ran out of time in a 19-14 setback to the Tigers.
With Honorary Captain Kort Freeman in attendance at the game, the E-Hawks came out in the first quarter and after a fumble recovery by Nick Schany at the 43-yard line, Emmetsburg struck soon after.
Quarterback Connor Joyce found Jacob Myers at the seven-yard line all alone and delivered a 42-yard scoring strike for a touchdown with 6:39 to go in the first quarter. Joyce would kick the conversion for a 7-0 lead.
But Spencer would responde with a 61-yard run to make the score 7-6 after the kick was blocked to end the first quarter.
The Tigers would strike again with 11:02 to go in the half off a one yard plunge, but again, the extra point was stopped for a 7-12 score.
Spencer would capitalize off a turnover with 8:26 to play in the half, as Connor Joyce attempted to pass and was picked off in the flat, with Spencer’s Michael Storey returning the ball 31-yards for a pick six. The conversion kick was good, giving the Tigers a 19-7 lead that would carry to the intermission.
The second half would open with the two teams trading possessions until Emmetsburg got the ball at their 34 and started driving downfield. Powerful runs by Corbin Saathoff and Nick Schany would grind the E-Hawks downfield until Nick Schany bulled his way into the end zone from a yard out to score with 6:44 to play in the third quarter. Joyce added the kick to cut the deficit to 14-19 as the third quarter would come to a conclusion.
Emmetsburg had the ball as the final quarter started and was driving, only to have a pass picked off once again, killing the drive. The E-Hawk defense would get the ball back on a punt and the offense began driving again.
But with time winding down, the E-Hawks would turn the ball over on downs at the Tigers’ 12-yard line. Spencer would end up punting with 2:01 to play and the E-Hawks tried to mount a final drive, only to turn over the ball on downs.
The Tigers would run the clock out to escape with the narrow win.
