Lady E-Hawks Split Opening Softabll Contests
Emmetsburg’s Lady E-Hawks opened their first week of the season with a split in games. On Thursday, the girls dropped a 2-0 decision to North Union, but rebounded on Friday night to tally a 14-0 shutout over Manson Northwest Webster for a 1-1 mark on the young season.
Thursday evening the Lady E-Hawks journeyed to Swea City and opened the season against North Union. With Mikayla Frerichs in the circle, Emmetsburg’s defense played well in the opening frames, limiting North Union to a walk, a single and a double in the first four innings, stranding four runners in the first four innings.
The Lady E-Hawks would get their first baserunners in the top of the fourth off back-to-bat hits by Kate Jackson and Annie Brennan, but left the duo stranded.
In the top of the fifth, Emmetsburg got a walk from Raven Brown, but left her waiting. North Union would get a leadoff single, but were turned away on a double play to end the inning.
In the top of the sixth, Emmetsburg went down in order, but the Warriors whoud com eup with a leadoff single and a double and then scored two runs off a single before the Lady E-Hawks made the stop, but in the final at-bat, Emmetsbur got a leadoff single from Molly Schany, but left her waiting when the at-bat ended.
Mikayla Frerichs was tagged with the loss, giving up two earned runs off seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts in her six innings of work. The Lady E-Hawks got singles from Kate Jackson, Annie Brennan and Molly Schany in the contest.
Returning home on Friday night, the Lady E-Hawks jumped out to an early lead and never looked back against the Cougars of Manson Northwest Webster. After retiring the Cougars in order to start the contest, Emmetsburg got a leadoff double from Sarah Simington to set the tone for the contest. A?double from Annie Brennan with one out would follow and singles from Molly Schany and Kaitlyn Jamison gave Emmetsburg a 3-0 lead when the inning ended.
Manson NW Webster got a base hit in their half of the second, but left the runner waiting. Ememtsburg came up and pushed runs from Morgna Jamison and Raven Brown over the plate off three singles to take a 5-0 lead.
Another single in the top of the third would leave a runner waiting for the Cougars, but Emmetsburg continued the onslaught, pushing five more runs home as Emma Anderson, Kaitlyn Jamison, Cheyanne Fries, Sarah Simington and Kate Jackson all came home to boost the lead to 10-0 when the inning ended.
Once again the Cougars would be retired in order in the top of the fourth, and Emmetsburg would plate four runs in the bottom of the inning as Cheyanne Fries, running for Mikayla Frerichs, Morgan Jamison, Raven Brown and Sarah Simington all made the trip around the diamond to end the game with the 14-0 victory.
Mikayla Frerichs earned teh win in the circle, pitching three and a third innings and allowing just two hits while striking out nine batters in the outing. Lindsay Carter would relieve for the final two-thirds of an inning and recorded a strikeout.
Emmetsburg got a double and two singles from Sarah Simington and a double from Annie Brennan, while Kate Jackson, Kaitlyn Jamison, Mikayla Frerichs andMorgan Jamison all had two hits each. Molly Schany, Emma Anderson and Raven Brown all added singles to the effort.
Emmetsburg opens Lakes Conference play for the final time this Wednesday evening, May 31, when they travel to LeMars to take on the Bulldogs. On Thursday, June 1, Emmetsburg returns home to host Sioux Central and then hose Western Christian of Hull in Lakes Conference play on Friday, June 2. JV action starts at 5:30 p.m.
