Lady E-Hawks, E-Hawks Fare Well At State Track Meet

DES?MOINES – With less than optimal conditions for most of the weekend, track and field athletes from Emmetsburg gave strong performances at the 2017 Iowa State Track and Field Championships. The State Meet concluded Saturday after a three-day run at Drake Stadium in Des Moines.

Highlighting the E-Hawks and Lady E-Hawks’ appearances at State was a new Emmetsburg High School record performance for the boys’ 4×200 relay during action on Friday afternoon. In wet conditions on the Jim Duncan Track in Drake Stadium, the foursome of Aaron Hutchison, Brent Wesley, Blake VerMulm and Grant Deitering earned a fifth place finish in Class 2A with their new EHS?record time of 1:31.98.

The Lady E-Hawks had several solid finishes in their competition, starting with an eighth place finish in Class 2A for Shelby Loomis in the 400 meter dash. Loomis ran Thursday evening and finished with a time of 1:00.32 to cap off her high school career.

The Lady E-Hawks’ Shuttle Hurdle Relay, comprised of Bailey Naig, Ali Laubenthal, Ashley Overberg and Hailey Foxhoven, would compete in preliminary heats Thursday night, and finished seventh in the 2A field with a time of 1:09.47, which sent them into Saturday’s finals, where the quartet would end up finishing in eighth place with a final clocking of 1:09.60.

Senior Kayla Joyce capped off her prep career in the 2A Discus on Friday afternoon, as she earned a ninth place finish off a throw of 115’10“.

DUAL?QUALIFIERS - Emmetsburg’s 4x100 and 4x200 relays both qualified for steate as the 18th seed for the 4x100 and sevneth seed for the 4x200. The 4x200 would place fifth with a new EHS?School Record time of 1:31.98, while the 4x100 finished sixth in their section with a :44.92, but did not qualify for the finals. The final entry for the Lady E-Hawks, senior Ashley Overberg, competed Friday afternoon in the 100 meter hurdles, and turned in a :16.28 clocking to finish 12th overall.

The E-Hawks got a tie for 16th place in the Class 2A High Jump competition from Zach Foxhoven, as he cleared a height of 5’10” in the competition on Friday afternoon in the stadium.

Emmetsburg’s 4×100 relay, with Aaron Hutchison, Brent Wesley, Blake VerMulm and Grant Deitering, would run Friday afternoon, and turned in a finish of :44.92, good for sixth in their heat, but did not advance to the finals.
