E-Hawks, Titans Wrestle Over Weekend At Herb Irgens Invtational
IDA?GROVE – Emmetsburg’s E-Hawks and the Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire Titans competed in this past weekend’s Herb Irgens Invitational Wrestling Tournament at Battle Creek/Odeboldt-Arthur/Ida Grove High School.
The Titans would earn a sixth-place finish in team points while Emmetsburg finished ninth in the 26-team tournament held Friday and Saturday.
Emmetsburg would be paced by the third-place finishes of Spencer Griffin at 132 pounds and Tanner Lundgren at 138 pounds and the fifth place finish of Levi Aldous at 120 pounds.
At 132 pounds, Spencer Griffin opened the tourn with a first-round bye and then scored a 17-1 Technical Fall, but in the quarterfinals, Griffin lost a 6-2 decision to Kolton Roth of GT/RA. In consolation action, Griffin earned a 1:42 Win by Fall and a 2:48 Win by Fall before taking a 6-2 decision win. Wrestling for third place, earned a 5-3 decision over Max Wettengel of Gilbertville-Don Bosco for the placing.
Wrestling at 138 pounds, Tanner Lundgren drew an opening round bye and the scored a 1:36 Win by Fall and took a quarterfinal 1:40 Win by Fall. In the semifinals, Lundgren would lost a 7-3 decision, but won the consolation semi with a 3-0 decision before earning third place with an 8-5 decision win over Wade Mitchell of Woodbury Central.
At 120 pounds, Levi Aldous was pinned in 3:11 to open the tourney, but in the consolation round, Aldous received two byes and then earned a 2:52 Win by Fall. An 8-4 decision victory would be followed by a 14-1 Major Decision win before Aldous was pinned in 1:38 by Shea Ruffridge of Pocahontas Area/LM. Wrestling for fifth place, Aldous would earn a 6-2 decision win over Ethan Kempema of Sergeant Bluff-Luton for the placing.
Kelly Griffin, wrestling at 106, earned two byes, but was pinned twice and earned a win by fall but did not place.
At 126 pounds, Andrew Walker received two byes but was pinned in three matches and did not place.
In action at 145, Carson Clark drew two byes, but was pinned in two matches and earned a win by fall, but would not place.
Mason Griffin, wrestling at 152 pounds, received a bye, but lost two decisions in Sudden Victory overtime and earned a decision win, but would not place.
At 160 pounds, Zach Yates received a bye and earned two wins by fall, but was also pinned twice and would not place.
Nick Schany, wrestling at 182 pounds, earned an opening win by fall, but was pinned in his next two matches and would not place.
At 195 pounds, Jimmie Steffens got an opening round win by fall, and tallied another win by fall and a decision win, but was pinned in two matches and would not place.
Rounding out the efforts at 285, Matt Hill received a pair of byes, but was pinned in one match and then lost a decision and would not place for the E-Hawks.
Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven- Ayrshire was led by Kolton Roth’s runner-up finish at 138 pounds, as well as a third place finish from Lucas Hoffman at 126 and a sixth place for Keeven Long and eighth place finishes for Beau Schany, Carter Murray and Treyton Cacek.
At 138 pounds, Kolton Roth earned a 1:49 Win by Fall and a :42 Win by Fall before taking a 6-2 decision win and a 5:04 Win by Fall. In the championship match, Roth would lose an 11-8 decision to Brayden Curry of Sergeant Bluff-Luton to settle for second place.
Lucas Hoffman, wrestling at 126 pounds, opened with a bye and claimed an :18 Win by Fall and a 1:36 Win by Fall before losing a 19-2 Technical Fall in 2:54. Hoffman then earned a 15-8 Major Decision win and earned third place with a 4-0 decision win over Isaac Dixon of Spirit Lake Park.
At 113, Keeven Long drew a by and earned a 3:26 Win by Fall before being pinned in :37, but came back for a 16-0 Tech Fall in 4:35. Long earned a 5:05 Win by Fall but was pinned in 1:19 before he was pinned in 3:41 by William Kooi of West Lyon to settle for sixth place.
At 145, Treyton Cacek drew a bye and won a 13-12 decision, but lost a 3-0 decision before earning a 1:46 Win by Fall, but was pinned in :41. Cacek would finish eighth after losing a 9-1 Major Decision to Teren Davidson of Woodbury Central.
Beau Schany, wrestling at 170, had a first-round bye and earned a :17 Win by Fall, but was then pinned in :31 before winning an injury default. Schany would lose an 11-0 Major Decision and finished eighth when he lost a 12-5 decision to Matthew Eckard of Okoboji.
At 182, Carter Murray won a 6-5 decision and a 1:52 Win by Fall, but was pinned in 4:56 before receiving an injury default win. Murray lost a 13-2 Major Decision and placed eighth in a 3-2 decision loss to Jake Soll of Audubon.
At 106 Hunter Naig would receive two byes and scored a Win by Fall, but was pinned twice and did not place.
Monte Matthews, wrestling at 120, lost a decision and drew a bye but was pinned and would not place.
At 138, Brett Griggs was pinned and drew a bye before being pinned and did not place.
Spencer Roth, wrestling at 152, got a bye and Major decision but was pinned and lost a 14-13 decision and did not place.
Blake Miller at 160 drew a bye, but was pinned earned a win by fall and a decision before losing a decision and would not place.
Cade Steelman at 195 had a bye but was pinned twice and did not place.
At 220, Noel Bochmann had a bye but was pinned twice and did not place.
Nate Harris, wrestling at 285, drew a bye and earned a decision win, but lost two decisions and would not place for the Titans.
