Emmetsburg Hosts Junior Varsity Wrestling Tournament

The Emmetsburg E-Hawk wrestling team hosted a Junior Varsity tournament Monday evening with several E-Hawk JV?grapplers earning good finishes in the round-robin format.

A trio of E-Hawk wrestlers were perfect on the night, winning all three of their matches in their respective brackets.

Kelly Griffin would go 3-0, as he earned an 11-0 Major Decision over Josh Graham of Eagle Grove and a 9-1 Major Decision over Kyle McClintic of Pocahontas Area/Laurens-Marathon and a 6-4 Sudden Victory decision win over Andrew Kutz of Storm Lake.

Andrew Walker was perfect on the night, earning a 4-1 decision win over Nick Olesen of Storm Lake and a 12-4 Major Decision over Xeng Vang of Storm Lake before wrapping up the evening with a :22 Win by Fall over Devin LaRue of Spencer.

Also going 3-0 on the night was Nick Krieg, as he earned an 8-4 decision over Justin Sundblad of Spencer and a 2:18 Win by Fall Jonathan Ladore of Storm Lake before finishing out the night with a 2:24 Win by Fall over Sammonte Bawden of Algona.

Bradley Wirtz would finish the tournament going 2-1, as he lost his first round match by a 5-3 decision to Tyler Vitzthum of Humboldt, but came back to score a 1:16 Win by Fall over Brent Triggs of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire and then earned an 8-7 decision victory over Brett Bleur of Algona.

Also finishing 2-1 was Zach Yates. Yates started with a 10-5 decision victory over Carter Helmers of algona, but was pinned in 1:49 of his match with Bronsan Reis of Cherokee. But Yates rebounded to finish out the night with a 6-2 decision win over Darin Christians of Spirit Lake.

Max Miller picked up a win against two losses in action. Miller was pinned in 2:44 of his first match with Jerod Campbell of South Central Calhoun, and then lost an 8-5 decision to Chris Eiler of Spencer. In his final match of the night, Miller earned a 2:24 Win by Fall over Skyler Lutkin of Algona.

Also finishing 1-2 for the E-Hawk Junior Varsity was Bret Hoyman. Hoyman lost his first round match by a 4-2 decision to Tyler Craven of Humboldt, and then lost a 5-4 decision to Ben Degen of Algona, but Hoyman would earn a final match victory with a 9-2 decision ver Simon Cahling of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire.

Jordan Ruff would fall in :30 of his first match at the hands of Mathew Bollig of Algona, and was then pinned in :22 by Hunter Harris of Estherville Lincoln Central before losing a 2-0 decision to Ian Gobell of West Hancock to close out his tournament.

Matthew Hill would be the victim of a 1:26 fall at the hands of Austin Brouwer of West Hancock and was then pinned in :23 by Kail Shannon of Storm Lake to close out the tournament.

The E-Hawks’ scheduled dual with Manson Northwest Webster and South Central Calhoun at Rockwell City on Tuesday night was postponed due to weather. The double dual will be made up on Thursday, Jan. 26.

The E-Hawk grapplers will compete in the West Lyon Tournament this Friday evening and travel to Rock Valley on Saturday to wrestle in the Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley Invitational.
