E-Hawks Edged In Season Opener By Indians

Emmetsburg’s E-Hawks opened their 2016-17 season with a tough 64-61 loss to Pocahontas Area/Laurens-Marathon Tuesday night. The E-Hawk Junior Varsity would also fall in their contest.

The varsity would battle evenly as the E-Hawks trailed 19-17 after one quarter and 41-35 at the break. But in the third quarter, the E-Hawks fought back to tie the game at 47-47 to start the final frame. The two teams would trade buckets back and forth before the E-Hawks cut the Indians’ lead to a point, 62-61, with :15 to go. A foul would give the Indians a 64-61 lead with :13 to go, and a last-second try to tie by Thomas Schultes bounced off the rim for the 64-61 loss for Emmetsburg.

Dalton Connelly led the E-Hawk effort with 19 points and Thomas Schultes followed with 17 points. Max Dunlap added 10 points, with Blake VerMulm scoring nine points. Brent Wesley added four points and Grant Deitering came off the bench to score two points in the effort.

For the E-Hawk Junior Varsity, it was a battle all game long as they fell to the Indians by a 47-29 final tally.

Emmetsburg would trail 24-15 at the intermission and couldn’t catch back up to the Indians before the final buzzer.

For Emmetsburg, Conner Joyce led the effort with 10 points, while Corbin Saathoff added seven points. Dylan Kibbie and Zach Mason both scored five points, while Alex Gramowski and Clayton Swanson both scored one point each in the effort.
