Lady E-Hawks Qualify For State XC
GARNER – With three freshmen and a senior leading the way, Emmetsburg’s Lady E-Hawks earned a repeat trip to this weekend’s State Cross Country Championships Thursday afternoon. Emmetsburg would finish third overall at the Class 2A Regional Qualifier in Garner, with four Lady E-Hawks placing in the top 15 individually, also qualifying for the State Individual Honors as well.
But for the E-Hawk boys, their season came to a close at the District meet.
“We got four individual state qualifiers and one team to state!” exclaimed Emmetsburg Head Coach Valerie Pickett. “This is such a great accomplishment. Raven Brown led the way and finished fifth while running her personal best time. We had three freshmen and a senior qualify individually. This says great things about the future of this team.”
Freshman Raven Brown ran a strong race, leading the Lady E-Hawks to finis with a personal best time of 20:07 for the fifth place honors.
Fellow freshman runner Hailey Foxhoven turned in another strong effort after the Lakes Conference meet and earned eighth place overall with her finishing time of 20:38.
Senior Ashley Overberg would earn her fourth State Meet qualification by finishing 13th with a time of 20:53.
Rounding out the individual qualifiers was freshman Gabrielle Janssen, who would finish just behind Overberg in 14th place with a time of 20:55.
Senior Shelby Loomis would earn a 36th place finish with her time of 22:11, while senior Jordan Hoyman was 49th in 23:00 and senior Jordan Lange rounded out the girls’ efforts with a 24:29 time, good for 67th place overall.
The E-Hawk boys, battling late season injuries, would not enjoy the succes of their counterparts on Thursday, as they would finish 14th overall in the team standings.
Leading the way for the E-Hawks was Adam Berkland, who turned in a time of 19:49 to finish in 66th place, while Aaron Hutchison would finish 68th with a time of 19:55. Takoda Harris would finish with a 20:08 to place 69th and Alex Gray would finish in 80th place with a 20:53 clocking. Dalton Hauschen would earn 83rd place with a 21:05 effort and Michael Frerichs would run a 21:40 to finish in 89th place.
“The boys were in a tough field and ended up not performing great,” Pickett admitted. “They have faced a lot this season and the group that competed really deserved to be there. They gave it what they had and I am extremely proud of the five seniors and one junior. It will be tough to say good-bye to those boys!”
With thoughts now focusing on the State Championships this Saturday, the Lady E-Hawks are no strangers to the course at Lakeside Golf Course north of Fort Dodge. The golf course is located at Kennedy Park, north of the Fort Dodge Regional Airport.
“The ladies faced a jump up in class this year but have managed to remain competitive while being the smallest school in 2A,” coach Pickett noted. “State will be a very tight race and we could finish anywhere from fourth to 12th. That is how tight of a race it will be. It is going to really come down to our fifth runner. She will need to tighten up that gap on our number four runner on Saturday.”
Pickett continued, “Come out and cheer the E-Hawks on October 29th at 1:00pm in Fort Dodge. If you have never been to a cross country race this is a great time to start!!!
