BURNSVILLE?- Emmetsburg’s Lady E-Hawks earned three All Conference honors and a honors pair of Honorable Mention honors at Thursday’s Lakes Conference Cross Country meet, hosted by LeMars High School. The Lady E-Hawk varsity squad finished third overall in the team race on Thursday as well.
Freshmen runners Raven Brown and Gabrielle Janssen, along with Senior Ashley Overberg earned the All-Conference honors by virtue of their finishes in the top 14 placings of the meet.
Raven Brown finished sixth with a time of 20:46.75, while Gabrielle Janssen finished 11th in 21:16.98 while Ashley Overberg earned 14th place with a time of 21:25.17.
Earning Honorable Mention honors were freshman Hailey Foxhoven, who finished 15th in 21:25.46, and senior Shelby Loomis, who finished 19th in a time of 22:04.94.
“Three ladies earn All-Conference Honors and one is the runner-up All-Conference! That is AMAZING!” exclaimed Emmetsburg Coach Valerie Pickett. “Our girls did go out and compete. I was hoping for a second place but third in the Lakes Conference is pretty solid. Looking at the results, Ashley Overberg was the first senior finisher overall, Shelby Loomis was second, and Jordan Hoyman fourth. This says a lot. Typically, seniors are taken over by the younger girls as they come in but our girls are still in the game. I am very proud of them. Ashley earned her fourth All-Conference Honor.”
Coach Pickett continued, “Raven Brown and Gabrielle Janssen were All-Conference as freshmen!! Hailey Foxhoven was the runner-up as a freshmen! I;m so proud of these girls too. They have really stepped it up and without them our team would not be where we are at.”
Jordan Hoyman would finish 24th in 22:21.93, while Jordan Lange was 33rd in 23:11.11 to round out the varsity finishes.
For the Junior Varsity girls, Emmetsburg finished second in the team standings. Mary Nelson was third in 23:29.67, while Jamie Bird was fourth in 23:39.06, a new personal record. Courtney Wurzer placed ninth in 24:10.55, while Emily Fuller was 13th in 24:35.32 and Hannah Merwald placed 15th in 24:49.89. Sara Fusco earned 43rd place in 27:56.67 and Kristen Kassel was 51st in 29:52.36.
For the E-Hawk boys, injuries took their toll, as they finished eighth in the varsity team standings.
Dawson Carlson led the effort with an 18:39.87 time to finish 25th, while Adam Deitering placed 35th in 19:33.52. Aaron Hutchison would finish 45th in 20:01.32, while Adam Berkland was 21st in 20:03.50. Takoda Harris earned 52nd place in 20:40.40, while Alex Gray placed 55th in 21:45.71 and Michael Frerichs was 56th in 22:06.92.
“The boys struggled,” Coach Pickett admitted. “I do not want to make excuses but they are hurt. Taking our top runner, Cruz Bowman, out for the season due to an injury is tough to overcome. Dawson Carlson is doing a fantastic job of stepping up the pace and he is racing as hard as possible. I am hoping to get these guys healed up for Districts. They are going to have a tough day there.”
For the E-Hawk Junior Varsity, Emmetsburg finished seventh in the team standings. Nolan Greene finished 24th in a time of 20:42.71, while Dalton Hauschen was 29th in 20:53.44. Brennan Duhn ran a 22:12.88 to finish 49th, while Jan Meier placed 53rd in a time of 22:23.58. Jordan Ruff finished 76th in a time of 24:41.26 and Chris Nichols finished 78th in 25:49.69.
“On the JV side, Mary Nelson looked very strong. Jamie Bird really stepped up and ran her PR,” Coach Pickett noted. “Emily Fuller and Hannah Merwald both had good races as well. Brennan Duhn also ran a PR for the boys side. This group is a fantastic group of young men and women. Each one is special and they all come together to make this family great. I am going to be very sad when this season is done.”
Next action for the harriers will be Thursday, Oct. 20, when they will compete in the Class 2A Regional/District Meet at Garner.
