Emmetsburg’s hopes of second victory in district play were derailed Friday night by a tough Western Christian team, who defeated Emmetsburg by a 48-6 final tally. Playing without the services of starting quarterback Max Dunlap, the E-Hawks fell to 1-1 in district play and 1-3 overall on the young season as they prepare to host Okoboji this Friday night.

Emmetsburg opened the game taking the kickoff to their 30 yard line but a punt would ensue. However, the E-Hawk defense came up big on the return as Western Christian fumbled the return and Corbin Saathoff recovered the loose ball at the Wolfpack 31 yard line. However, the drive would stall out and Western Christian got the ball back on downs, and promptly drove from their own 23 yard line down field to score off a one yard plunge with 5:08 to go in the opening quarter. The kick made the score 7-0 Western Christian as the E-Hawks took over.

Taking over, Emmetsburg would go three and out, but Western would suffer a similar fate, giving Emmetsburg the ball back on the punt. With quarterback Conner Joyce at the helm, the E-Hawks tried to march downfield, but with 1:04 to go in the quarter, a pass was intercepted by the Wolfpack at their 46 yard line to kill the drive.

As the second quarter began, Western Christian was driving once again, and came up with a 25-yard touchdown reception for a score with 10:58 to play in the half. The conversion kick fell short, making the score 13-0.

The E-Hawks would take the kick and used the clock well, driving downfield on steady running from Brent Wesley and Grant Deitering. The drive would come to fruition for Emmetsburg with 4:44 when Brent Wesley found the end zone from three yards out to score. The conversion kick was muffed, leaving Emmetsburg to trail 13-6.

But on the resulting kickoff, Western Christian got the benefit of the ball going out of bounds to start with excellent field position and quickly engineered a drive toa ended with a 10-yard touchdown pass with 3:22 to play in the half. The kick made the score 20-6, but Emmetsburg wasn’t ready to concede anything.

The E-Hawks would go three and out on the resulting possession and Western Christian used a couple of big runs to set up a 12-yard scoring run with 1:19 to go in the half. The kick would give the Wolfpack a 27-6 lead at the intermission.

The second half opened with Western Christian getting the ball and quickly engineering a drive that was capped off with an 11-yard run for a score with 10:13 to play in the third quarter.

Trailing 34-6 after the kick, Emmetsburg tried to get the offense back on track, but with 9:30 to go in the quarter, a fumble by the E-Hawks was recovered by Western Christian at the Emmetsburg 15-yard line.

The turnover was capitalized on quickly as the Wolfpack scored off a nine-yard pass with 9:10 to go in the quarter, and the conversion kick started the continuous game clock with the 41-6 score.

The E-Hawks took over and tried to engineer a drive, but after gaining a first down, a fumble was recovered at their 22 yard line by the Wolfpack and one play later, Western Christian was in the end zone off a 22-yard pass for a score. The kick made the score 48-6 with 7:26 to go in the third quarter.

The two teams would trade possessions through the remainder of the quarter, and with 11:15 to go in the game, a 30-yard field goal attempt by Western Christian failed. The E-Hawks would continue to battle as the clock wound down to end the game in the disappointing loss.

For the E-Hawks, Brent Wesley carried the ball 23 times to gain 100 yards, while Dylan Kibbie added five rushes for 22 yards. Conner Joyce made six rushes for 21 yards, with Grant Dietering adding 13 rushes for eight yards and Spencer Griffin added three rushes for 15 yards in the effort.
