While the first two games of the season haven’t gone the way the Emmetsburg E-Hawks have hoped, the fact that they are non-district games means one thing.

The season that counts starts this Friday night with the start of the district slate of games. For Emmetsburg, that means a renewal of an old rivalry with Sibley-Ocheyedan’s Generals.

Once members of the Lakes Conference along with the E-Hawks, Sibley-Ocheyedan left the Lakes Conference in the 1980 to join the Siouxland Conference.

The Generals and the E-Hawks were district rivals for two years in the 2000’s, but haven’t been on the E-Hawks’ schedule for several years, however the two teams are reunited through the new district alignments for this season.

“Sibley-Ocheyedan has great size,” noted Emmetsburg Head Coach Mike Dunlap. “They have very talented backs, and they also have great speed and size on their club.”

According to Dunlap, the Generals’ offense is based on the Spread and will see a mixture of the run and passing plays, meaning the E-Hawk defense will need to expect anything.

“On defense, they work from the 4-4 and we have seen them do some stunting on tape,” Dunlap acknowledged.

Looking back at last Friday night’s loss to Estherville Lincoln Central in the renewal of another old rivalry in a non-district contest, Dunlap noted there were positives for the E-Hawks to build on.

“We were able to move the ball well on the ground,” Dunlap noted, pointing to several drives, including a couple of nice runs for touchdowns during the contest.

“One thing that we must improve on is our tackling,” the E-Hawk Head Coach admitted. “We must tackle better and we have to continue to play assignment defense.”

Kickoff for this Friday’s game at Sibley-Ocheyedan High School will take place at 7 p.m.
