Titans Defeat Wolverines To Advance In Post Season
ALGONA – The post season continued for one county team while another ended their run on Thursday night. The Titans of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire earned a73-45 victory over the Wolverines of West Bend-Mallard/ Gilmore City-Bradgate in Class 1A Boys District tournament play.
The win advances GT/RA into a District Semi-final tonight (Tuesday, Feb. 23) against St. Mary’s of Storm Lake in a 6:30 p.m. contest at Bishop Garrigan High School in Algona.
Thursday’s District quarterfinal tourney meeting was the third of the season for the two in-county rivals, with GT/RA earning the wins in the two previous meetings.
The Wolverines would tie the game at 3-3 just moments into the first quarter of play, but from there on out, the Titans would take command of the contest, posting a 17-10 lead when the first quarter ended. GT/RA would match their offensive performance in the second quarter, outscoring the Wolverines 18-9 in the quarter to post a 35-19 advantage at the intermission.
In the second half of the contest, GT/RA played their trademark pressure defense, and combined with an up-tempo offense and strong rebounding, were able to move out to a 53-31 lead when the third quarter ended.
In the final frame, West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate refused to surrender and fought to the final buzzer for the 73-45 final score.
The Wolverines would get 20 points from Jack Banwart to lead their offensive effort, while Nolan Robert Dahlhauser added 12 points. Danie Riesenberg would chip in eight points, while Nolan Roger Dahlhauser scored three points and Jeff Riesenberg dropped in a bucket for two points.
Taylor Bennett, Jeff Riesenberg and Jack Banwart would all grab five rebounds for the Wolverines in the effort. Danie Riesenberg pulled down four carroms and also blocked two shots, while Jack Banwart blocked a shot and made five steals as the Wolverines closed their season with a mark of 3-19.
For the victorious Titans’ Jared Sikora held the hot hand, dropping in 26 points on the night, while Andy Geelan would record a double-double with 16 points and 10 assists on the night.
Noah Stukey and Michael Girres would both score 13 points each in the win, while Taylor Enderson added three points and Jacob Conlon chipped in two points.
Andy Geelan grabbed seven boards, with Noah Stukey pulling down six carroms in the effort, which improves the Titans to 20-1 on the season.
