Hot Shots Signup Meeting Wednesday
The Emmetsburg HS Hot Shots trap shooting team will hold the 2016 season sign-up, recruitment, and informational meeting for student athletes and parents on Wednesday February 17 in the High School Library at 7 p.m.
The Hot Shots trap shooting team is open to Emmetsburg School District students in Fifth-Twelfth grades, and competes under the Scholastic Shooting Sports Federation’s Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP). Both boys and girls are welcomed. Around 3,500 student athletes are expected to participate in the SCTP in Iowa during 2016. Student athletes learn the sport of trap shooting, emphasizing gun safety, self-discipline, and teamwork. All Hot Shots athletes are encouraged to participate in competitions no one “sits on the bench.”
Practices will be after school two days a week at Sportsman Recreation Area north of Cylinder starting the week of March 20 and will continue throughout the season. Trap squads consisting of five similar-aged athletes each shoot at 25 clay targets in a “round” of trap. Competitions consist of two rounds of trap. Students compete at trap shoots hosted by the Hot Shots or travel to other shooting venues as scheduled, from which athletes accumulate scores that count toward their final year-end placing, culminating with the State Championships June 10-12. Hot Shots athletes are required to adhere to school good-conduct policies and meet academic eligibility standards in order to participate in competitions.
Hot Shots participants are expected to provide their own firearm, safety equipment, and shell bag. Volunteer coaches, certified with DNR, NRA, or 4-H Shooting Sports credentials, will assist in selection and use of the proper fitting and size of firearm and accessories appropriate for each athlete. Athletes must pay a SCTP registration fee before participating in any competition. An additional Hot Shots “participation” fee is waived if the athlete is able to secure a sponsorship. Some scholarships and open sponsorships are available in order that financial need is not a limiting factor in an athlete’s ability to participate. Practice ammo is additional, but is available and subsidized by the sponsorships and grant awards that minimize the cost.
Registration forms are available at the high school and middle school offices, and will be available at the meeting on the 17th. Both athlete and parent signatures are required on registration forms.
