Emmetsburg’s basketball teams closed out their respective Lakes Conference seasons Tuesday night hosting LeMars. Despite valiant efforts by both teams, the visiting Bulldogs would claim victories in both contests.

The Lady E-Hawks would suffer through a tough first quarter of play, as LeMars was able to jump out to a 15-6 lead at the end of the first stanza of play, but Emmetsburg would battle their way back with some good defensive play to cut the gap to four points, 24-20, at the intermission.

The second half of the contest turned into a defensive battle as both teams would score just six points each in the third quarter to see Emmetsburg trailing LeMars, 26-30 to start the final quarter.

But down the stretch, LeMars would get a couple of big three-point buckets and was able to turn up the defense to edge away from Emmetsburg to take a 41-35 win from the Lady E-Hawks.

Kayla Joyce had a strong game inside for the Lady E-Hawks, scoring 11 points to pace the offense, while Kate Jackson added 10 points to the effort. Jenna Chapman and Bailey Naig would both chip in five points each, while Kaity Mason came away with four points.

The boys contest started in much the same fashion for the E-Hawks, as LeMars took a 17-6 lead after the opening quarter, but Emmetsburg fought back to trail 31-23 at halftime.

In the third quarter, the E-Hawks would continue to battle the pressure defense of the Bulldogs, but would trail 50-41 when the third quarter came to a close. As the fourth quarter ticked down, LeMars was able to knock down just about every shot they took as the E-Hawks fought hard down to the final horn in the 74-57 loss.

Emmetsburg’s offense would be led by sophomore Blake VerMulm’s 17-point effort, while Wes Schultes and Thomas Schultes both ended up scoring 10 points each in the effort.

Max Dunlap came away with nine points, while Dalton Connelly added five points and Brent Wesley and Christian Strohman each drained a three-pointer for three points each in the contest.

The E-Hawks will celebrate Senior Night this Thursday as they host Manson Northwest Webster.
