E-Hawks Fall To Pocahontas Area Grapplers In Dual

Emmetsburg’s E-Hawk wrestlers closed out the dual season Thursday night with a make-up meeting with the Indians of Pocahontas Area. However, the E-Hawks would come up short in a 46-31 final tally.

The varsity portion of the dual started at 195 pounds, where the E-Hawks forfeited to the Indians’ Keegan Jepsen. At 220 pounds, Emmetsburg’s Robert Nelson would earn a 2:59 win by fall over Tyler Case to even the score, but the Indians would get a win at 285 when the E-Hawks’ Matt Hill was pinned in :42 by Spencer Trenary and the E-Hawks forfeited to Jacob Mielke at 106 pounds.

With an 18-6 lead, The Indians added to the advantage when Emmetsburg’s Andrew Walker was pinned in :36 by Shea Ruffridge in the 113 pound matchup.

At 120 pounds, the E-Hawks’ Christian Nichols would lose a 12-2 Major Decision to the Indians’ Joe Minkler to put Pocahontas Area up by a 28-6 tally.

But at 126 pounds, the E-Hawks got back on track. Tanner Lundgren would score a 3:22 win by fall over Aldo Ayala and at 132 pounds, Spencer Griffin made quick work of Tyler Reis with a :52 win by fall.

In the 138 pound match, however, the Indians got the win as Carson Clark would be pinned in 1:43 by Clayton Reis to make the score 34-18 at that point.

Emmetsburg refused to concede, as Dillon VanOosbree came away with a 9-1 Major Decision over Kincaid Williams in the 145 pound match before Conner Crosgrove was pinned in 2:54 by Connor Schoening in the 152 pound match.

At 160 pounds, Gage Jamison would earn a 2:37 win by fall over Adam Brown of the Indians before the wildest match of the evening took place at 170 pounds.

Emmetsburg’s Austin Noll met the Indians’ Philip Minkler in the 170 pound match and the two wrestlers battled for two and a half periods with Minkler holding the advantage until Noll would score an escape and a takedown before letting Minkler escape, but Noll was able to fight Minkler off in the final seconds to emerge with the 6-5 decision victory.

In the final varsity match, Jimmie Steffens would be pinned in :32 by Daniel Sommerlot for the 46-31 final score.

Several Junior Varsity matches were wrestled as well on Thursday.

At 220 pounds, the E-Hawks’ Jeremiah Weir earned a 3:18 win by fall over Zane Wellik, while at 152 pounds, the Indians’ Chase Boeve would record a 5:45 win by fall over Emmetsburg’s Zach Yates.

In another 152 pound match, the E-Hawks’ Kyle Licht earned a 3:14 win by fall over Thomas Halligan of the Indians.

Emmetsburg’s Jacob Myers, also wrestling at 152, would go to an overtime period to earn a 10-8 decision victory over Drake Allen before Jordan Ruff closed out the meet with a 1:53 win by fall over Pocahontas Area’s Matt Hofmeyer.

The E-Hawks will gear up for Saturday’s Class 1A Sectional Tournament at West Hancock. First and second place finishers at the Sectional tournament advance to the 1A District tournament Saturday, Feb. 13 at Manson.
