Santa arrived a little early for Coach Bill Geelan’s E-Hawks as they earned their first win of the season Tuesday with a 58-44 triumph over Cherokee. The win gives Emmetsburg a 1-4 mark in the Lakes Conference boys race and a 1-6 mark overall as the holiday break begins.

The game started out evenly for both teams, as Cherokee would take an 11-10 lead after the opening quarter, but the E-Hawks would battle back with a tenacious defense to take a 25-21 lead at the intermission.

In the third quarter, Emmetsburg’ s defense continued to play well, getting several rebounds and on the other end of the floor, the E-Hawks extended their lead to a 40-31 margin to start the final quarter.

Down the stretch, Emmetsburg was able to maintain their lead to tally the 58-44 victory as an early Christmas present.

For the E-Hawks, Thomas Schultes led the effort with 16 points, while Dalton Connelly added 12 markers and Max Dunlap chipped in 11 points. Cameron Heddinger tallied seven points and Nick Grandstaff added five points, with Wes Schultes and Brent Wesley both scoring four points each and Blake VerMulm adding a bucket for two points.
