E-Hawks Close Regular Season With Win

Emmetsburg’s E-Hawks finished the regular season with a 42-14 win over Lake Mills on Senior Night Friday night to finish third in Class 1A District Three with a 4-2 district mark and 5-4 overall record. More importantly, it sends the E-Hawks into post-season action this Wednesday, Oct. 28, at Hinton against the Blackhawks. Game time will be 7 p.m.

The E-Hawks opened Senior Night with a bombastic first play from scrimmage, as Gage Jamison took a handoff and broke through the right side of the line to race 76 yards for a touchdown just :20 into the contest. The conversion kick would sail wide leaving the E-Hawks with a 6-0 advantage.

Lake Mills would get a first down but then punted, allowing Emmetsburg to start at their 41 with 9:52 to go in the quarter. The E-Hawks moved downfield steadily and with 6:59 to go in the quarter, Brent Wesley took a handoff and raced 18 yards for a score. But once again, the PAT?failed, making the score 12-0.

Lake Mills would take over but saw their hopes dashed quickly as Ethan Thompson picked off a pass at the E-Hawks’ 15 yard line to kill a drive. But Emmetsburg would have to make some personnel changes as Max Dunlap moved to quarterback to fill in for an injured Clayton Freeman.

The E-Hawks started at their 15 and drove to the Bulldogs’ 47 yard line before turning the ball over on downs to end the first quarter with a 12-0 lead.

Lake Mills would engineer a drive starting at their own 47 and ended up driving 52 yards before scoring off a one yard plunge with 11:05 remaining in the half. The conversion kick made the score 12-7 as Emmetsburg got the ball back at their 26 after the kick.

With a light rain starting to fall, the E-Hawks ground their way to midfield, and with 7:01 to go, Wes Schultes broke free and raced 46 yards for a score. The try for a two-point conversion by Dunlap worked, giving Emmetsburg a 20-7 lead.

Lake Mills would turn the ball over on their next possession with a fumble that the E-Hawks’ Trey Truog recovered at the 26 yard line. But despite the best efforts on a slippery field, the E-Hawks couldn’t find the endzone and turned the ball over on downs at the six-yard line.

But the Bulldogs sputtered and had to punt, but a shanked kick put Emmetsburg at the Bulldogs’ 28 yard line with 1:00 to go in the half. A quick five yard run was followed by a 23-yard pass from Dunlap to Will Schany in the endzone for the touchdown with :34 to go in the half. Thomas Schultes ran in the conversion to put Emmetsburg up 28-7 at the intermission as the rain began to come down harder.

Emmetsburg kicked off to start the second half, but Lake Mills would go nowhere and punted, but a shanked punt put the E-Hawks at the Bulldogs’ 15 yard line with 10:56 on the clock.

The E-Hawks went to work and capped off the short drive with a one-yard plunge by Gage Jamison with 9:07 to go in the third. The kick by Thomas Schultes was good for a 35-7 lead as the E-Hawks set up on defense.

Lake Mills would go nowhere and punted on fourth and 16, giving Emmetsburg the ball at the Bulldogs’ 47 yard line. IT would take 10 play but Thomas Schultes bulled his way into the end zone from five yards away with 2:37 to go in the third quarter. Schultes added the conversion kick to start the continuous clock with the 42-7 lead as the third quarter wound down.

With the reserves taking over for the E-Hawks in the final quarter, time rand down quickly as the two teams traded possessions before Lake Mills would start at Emmetsburg’s 47 yard line and engineered a 53-yard drive capped off with a 15 yard pass reception for a score with 4:11 to go in the game. The kick made the score 42-14 and stopped the continuous clock.

The two teams would trade possessions one last time and Emmetsburg would run the clock out working their way down to the Bulldogs’ 28 yard line as time expired.

The E-Hawks would end the night with 325 rushing yards off 55 attempts, while Lake Mills had 46 rushing yards off 20 attempts.

Max Dunlap would completed four of five attempts for 72 yards and one score to give Emmetsburg a total of 397 total yards of offense on the night, while Lake Mills completed 12 of 23 passes for 137 yards for a total offensive effort of 185 yards.

Brent Wesley had 12 carries for 98 yards, while Thomas Schultes added 19 rushes for 82 yards. Gage Jamison picked up 80 yards on four rushing attempts, while Wes Schultes had 52 yards from a pair of rushes. Trey Truog had 13 yards from six attempts, while Max Dunlap carried the ball six times for 12 yards. AJ?Krieg had two rushes for five yards, while Tanner Lundgren and Hunter McAllister both rushed one time each and each gained one yard.

Defensively, the E-Hawks got six tackles from Ethan Thompson as well as an interception, while Brent Wesley also came away with six tackles. Will Schany made four stops, while Gage Jamison added four tackles and Trey Truog had four tackles and a fumble recovery.
