Titans Earn Nice Win Over Coon Rapids-Bayard
RUTHVEN – The Titans of Graettinger-Terril/Ruth-ven-Ayrshire shook off a slow start Friday night to come away with a 38-6 victory over Coon Rapids-Bayard in a non-district eight-man contest. The game was added to the schedule late in the season after Laurens-Marathon discontinued its football program.
As has been the tale of the season so far, Titan quarterback Michael Girres directed the offensive attack by example, as he would score four running touchdowns and passed for a fifth score in the victory, which improves the Titans to 1-1 in district action and 4-1 overall on the season.
It took nearly the entire first quarter for GT/RA to get the offense going, but the first score came off a 13-yard run by Girres with 7:30 to play in the opening frame. A pass to Jared Sikora for the two-point conversion put the Titans up 8-0 as the first quarter would come to a close.
Coon Rapids-Bayard would get on the scoreboard on their first possession of the second quarter, with a 15-yard touchdown run, but the two-point conversion try would fail, making the score 8-6 with 11:56 to play in the half.
GT/RA got the ball back and quickly drove down the field, capping off the drive with a four yard run from Girres, but the conversion try failed, making the score 14 – 6.
After Coon Rapids-Bayard went three and out, the Titans struck again as a 37-yard quarterback keeper by Girres would find paydirt with 5:56 to play in the half. Tyler Hoffman ran in the conversion for a 22-6 lead at the intermission.
The second half would be all Graettinger-Terril/Ruth-ven-Ayrshire, as the Titans would get a 16-yard pass reception by Jared Sikora for a touchdown in the third quarter for a score, and Girres added the conversion run for a 30-6 lead to start the fourth quarter.
The final touchdown of the night would be scored on a 10-yard run from Girres, who would pass to Magnus Vangsbo for the conversion and what would be the game-winning 38-6 tally with 10:15 to go in the game.
The Titans’ reserves would finish out the contest and preserve the victory for the hometown fans.
