Titans Fall In High-Scoring Tilt
MARCUS – The Titans of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire gave their best effort but came up short in a 56-40 loss to the Eagles of Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn in eight-man action Friday night. The loss is the Titans first of the season, giving them a 2-1 mark on the year.
The game started with the Eagles scoring first, but the Titans would answer with a 17-yard touchdown run by quarterback Michael Girres and two-point conversion for an 8-6 lead.
MMC would then score three times in the first half to retake the lead and post a 26-8 lead with 7:32 to play in the first half.
The Titans would respond with Michael Girres engineering scoring runs of a yard and 15 yards just before ethe end of the first half, and were able to pull within a score to trail 26-20 at the intermission.
GT/RA would retake the lead to start the second half of action, as he scored off a 45 yard touchdown run and then added a 16 yard touchdown run to give the Titans a 32-26 advantage midway through the third quarter.
Marcus-Meriden-Cleghorn would respond with a pair of scores to take a 40-32 lead, but the Titans replied in kind with a 20 yard touchdown run from Girres to tie the score at 40-40 with just over 2:00 to play in the third frame.
However, MMC?would punch another score into the end zone as the quarter ended for a 48-40 lead to start the final quarter.
The two teams traded possessions in the final frame, but the Eagles would put the game away with just under 2:00 to play off a 35 yard touchdown run to claim the 56-40 final margin of victory over the Titans.
For the Titans, Michael Girres was the majority of the offense, as he rushed 41 times for 366 yards, scoring all six touchdowns in the effort. Girres completed three of eight passes for 42 yards as well.
Alex Hoffman would gain 48 yards off 13 rushing attempts, and made two catches for 33 yards and Tyler Hoffman had one catch for nine yards.
The Titans’ defense was paced by Tyler Hoffman with nine tackles and a pair of quarterback sacks. Sam Skattebo,Magnus Vangsbo and Alex Hoffman all made eight tackles and Michael Girres added seven tackles.
The Titans return home to Ruthven on Friday night to host West Bend-Mallard/ Gilmore City-Bradgate.
