Freddie Rodriguez Signs With University of Oklahoma

By Staff | Jul 28, 2015

Iowa Lakes Community College wrestling standout Freddie Rodriguez has signed an NCAA letter of intent and will be wrestling next season for the University of Oklahoma Sooners.

Rodriguez wrapped up a highly successful career at Iowa Lakes this past February when he claimed his second national championship. Along with his two national championships, he was three-times named Outstanding Wrestler at tournaments including at the 2015 NJCAA National Tournament. As a freshman, he posted a record of 33-8 while only losing 3 matches his sophomore campaign on the way to a 38-3 record. Amazingly, in two years, he only lost one match to another junior college wrestler. His other losses were all to NCAA opponents.

Freddie explains why he chose the University of Oklahoma.

“I chose the University of Oklahoma for the same reasons I chose Iowa Lakes. I felt like it was the right place for me. It felt like a family. I really like how nice the people are there. It reminds me a lot of the people at Iowa Lakes.”

Rodriguez is excited about the opportunity to wrestle for the Sooners.

“I never thought I’d be in a Sooner uniform. It’s everything I’ve worked for. It’s a dream come true and I’m so excited for the future.

Head Coach Cody Alesch shares his excitement and commends Freddie for his accomplishments at Iowa Lakes.

“It has been rewarding to watch Freddie grow and push himself both academically and athletically to the point where he can move on to one of the elite wrestling programs and universities in the country.”
