Post Season Ends For Titans

NEWELL – The season came to a close Monday night for the Titans of Graettinger-Terril/Ruthven-Ayrshire in a 52-26 loss to Newell-Fonda. The loss gives GT/RA a final season mark of 7-4.

Newell-Fonda would strike quickly, scoring with 9:34 to go in the first quarter off a one-foot touchdown and added the kick for a 7-0 lead. The Titans would end up going three and out, giving the Mustangs the ball back and setting up a 22-yard field goal with 5:19 to go in the opening quarter for a 10-0 lead.

GT/RA would be intercepted on their resulting possession just before the end of the quarter, and the Mustangs would end up punting just after the start of the second quarter. Starting at their own one-yard line, the Titans got a couple passes from Michael Girres to Kyle Dalen and Ethan Petersen, but on the next play, Michael Girres would go down with an ankle injury, bringing Marcus Girres in to take over at QB, but the Titans would turn the ball over on downs after that.

The Mustangs would tak over, only to suffer a quarterback sack at the hands of Damian Suwalski that would force a punt. The Titans took over but would end up punting again.

Newell-Fonda took over at their 15 on the next play, a 65-yard reception and kick gave the Mustangs a 17-0 lead with 4:02 to play in the half.

Once again the Titans took over, only to be intercepted a second time. The Mustangs would capitalize quickly, scoring an 18-yard touchdown run and the kick made the score 24-0 with :58 to go in the half.

But the Titans weren’t to be denied. Jake Wegner returned the kickoff to the 29 yard line and two plays later, Wegner made a 26-yard catch for a score with :11 to go in the half. The conversion try failed, making the score 24-6 at the break.

The Titans got the ball to start the third quarter, but were intercepted a third time in the game. Newell-Fonda capitalized with a 28 yard reception for the score and kick would make it 31-6 with 10:59 to go in the quarter.

With Michael Girres back in the game after Marcus had to be helped from the field before the half, the Titans started a drive at their 11 and came up with an 11 yard run by Girres for a score with 8:23 on the clock. The conversion was stopped, making the score 31-12.

The Mustangs would march down field on their next possession and scored off a 19 yard reception, but had to try their conversion twice after a penalty before taking a 38-12 lead with 5:08 to go in the quarter.

Once again the Titans took over and Girres began passing, hitting Kyle Dalen with a pass that Dalen took to the Mustangs’ 17 yard line.

With 1:22 on the clock, Garrett Parker made a 17 yard catch for a touchdown to make the score 38-18 as the quarter ended.

Newell-Fonda would open the fourth driving down to the one yard line, but the Titan defense held firm and stopped the Mustangs on three straight downs. GT/RA took over on downs at the three with 7:49 to go in the game.

The effort would end up in a punt, however, and the Mustangs quickly punched in a score from nine yards out with 5:58 to go.

Trailing 45-18, the Titans started at their own 27 and once again, Michael Girres drove the team downfield and hit Ethan Petersen with a perfect throw as Petersen hit the goal line in grasp of a defender to score with 3:$4 to go for a 26-45 score.

But the Mustangs would strike a final time, scoring off a 10 yard run with 1:46 to go to ice the win and end GT/RA’s season.

The Titans picked up 122 rushing yards off 26 plays, with Kyle Dalen earning 58 yards on 13 carries and Mason McGrauth adding 36 yards on three carries. Michael Girres had six rushes for 21 yards and completed 13 of 22 passes for 187 yards with two picks.

Ethan Petersen had six catches for 93 yards and Kyle Dalen added six receptions for 59 yards, while Jake Wegner had two grabs for 32 yards. and Marcus Girres caught one pass for 10 yards and completed four of 13 passes for seven yards with one pick.

Mason McGrauth had 11 tackles and Damian Suwalksi had 10 stops including a sack. Alex Hoffman added nine tackles to the effort.
