E-Hawks To Resume District Campaign At Western Christian
Coming off a bitter one-point Homecoming loss last Friday night, Emmetsburg’s E-Hawks re-enter the district campaign of games this Friday night making a long road trip to Hull to meet up with Western Christian.
This will be just the second ever meeting of the two clubs at the varsity level, while the freshmen and sophomore have meet in previous years prior to last year’s district assignment.
Even though Emmetsburg took last year’s game handily, nothing is assured this time around, and E-Hawk mentor Mike Dunlap and his ballclub are painfully aware of that fact.
“Western Christian has tremendous size and tremendous speed,” Dunlap began. “They have great athletes all the way around.”
The Wolfpack will present an offense that will bear some similarities to what Manson Northwest Webster presented last Friday night.
“They work out of the shotgun doubles on offense,” Dunlap noted. “They have a very good quarterback, and they have very, very talented skill positions. Their tailback is also very good, as he rushed for 240 yards last week when they played Hartley-Melvin-Sanborn.”
On defense, the Wolfpack is a team that attacks – much like their namesake.
“They work out of a 6/2 or a 3-5-3 set on defense with multiple blitzes,”?Dunlap said. “They come right after you on every play. They’ll have nine guys right up in the box on every play we run.”
In looking back at last Friday’s contest, Dunlap noted there were a combination of things that played roles in the loss, but the biggest one is easily identified.
“For us, we have to stop the mistakes,”?Dunlap said simply. “The mistakes we made gave the ball game away for us.”
As has been one of the key points every week so far this season, the E-Hawks have to clean up the little things, according to Dunlap.
“We have got to eliminate the mental mistakes, and also become more consistent in our play in the offensive, defensive and special teams portions of our game. We’re right at that point where things will click for us – we just need to step up to it.”
Kickoff for Friday district football game is set for 7 p.m. in Hull.
