Lady E-Hawks Rebound For 8-3 Win
ALGONA – After a tough loss on Monday night, Emmetsburg’s Lady E-Hawks rebounded to earn an 8-3 victory over Algona’s Bulldogs on the softball diamond Tuesday night.
Emmetsburg would go down in order in the top of the first, and Algona would put two runners on base in their half of the inning but Emmetsburg’s defense held firm to keep the Bulldogs scoreless.
In the second, Emmetsburg would go down in order again, but only gave up a base hit to the Bulldogs in the bottom of the second to keep the game scoreless.
The Lady E-Hawks got a baserunner in the top of the third when Kate Jackson singled, only to be left waiting at first when the at-bat ended. But Algona suffered a similar fate in their half of the inning, leaving a runner stranded to leave the score at 0-0 to start the fourth inning.
The fourth inning continued the defensive battle at both teams were retired in order, but in the top of the fifth, Emmetsburg drew first blood.
Hanna VanOosbree led off with a fly ball to center field, but Ashton Connelly doubled to left. Kendall Deitering hit a fly ball to second for the second out, but Kate Jackson singled, advancing courtesy runner Bailey Naig to third, where she scampered home to score before Alexa Naig struck out.
Algona would get two hits in their half of the inning, but left both runners stranded to trail 1-0 when the inning ended.
In the sixth, Whitney Kibbie singled and took second on a passed ball before Miranda Vlasman struck out. But Emily Noll stepped up and pounded out a two-run homer to score Kibbie as well for a 3-0 advantage.
Jacque Carlson grounded out for the second out but Hanna VanOosbree singled and a double from Ashton Connelly brought VanOosbree home before Kendall Deitering grounded out to end the at-bat.
Trailing 4-0, Algona stranded a runner in their half of the inning.
The seventh inning would get a little wild as Kate Jackson struck out, but Alexa Naig singled and Whitney Kibbie reached on a fielders’ choice. Miranda Vlasman reached on a fielder’s choice that put Naig out at third and Emily Noll reached on an error that let Kibbie score her run. Miranda Vlasman would score off a passed ball before Jacque Carlson got on base off an error.
Hanna VanOosbree was hit by a pitch, but Ashton Connelly ripped a double to score Noll and Carlson before Kendall Deitering was put out to end the at-bat.
Emmetsburg settled in to play defense in the bottom of the seventh as Algona came up to bat.
A pair of singles would lead to a run after a third base hit, but a sacrifice scored a second run and a fourth hit scored the third run for the Bulldogs with two out. A walk would ensue, but a throwdown to third base by Emmetsburg catcher Miranda Vlasman ended the game for the Emmetsburg win.
Ashton Connelly got the win, going seven innings and allowing three runs, all earned, off nine hits with one walk and three strikeouts.
For Emmetsburg, Emily Noll tallied a Home Run, while Ashton Connelly had three doubles. Kate Jackson added two base hits. Whitney Kibbie, Hanna VanOosbree and Alexa Naig all added base hits.
