Fairy Tale Run Comes To A Halt
All good things come to an end – it’s a fact of life. For the Emmetsburg Lady E-Hawks, the ride was fun while it lasted, though.
Emmetsburg’s E-Hawks, who had played to a 2-18 mark in the regular season, erupted in the post season to earn a pair of wins and a ticket to the Regional semi-final before the magic ran out.
Emmetsburg saw its magic post season end Friday night with a 41-39 heartbreaker in Milford to the Pioneers. That loss had been predicated by an improbable 49-44 overtime victory over North Union in Armstrong on Tuesday night.
The tournament run began back on Feb. 9 with a 54-41 win over Pocahontas Area in the opening round of the Class 2A Regional, avenging a 31-point loss from the beginning of the season for Emmetsburg Head Coach Anne Fiene’s ball club.
Advancing into the Regional quarterfinal on Tuesday, Feb. 12, Emmetsburg journeyed to Armstrong to take on North Union.
Coming off their win on Saturday, the Lady E-Hawks hit the court on Tuesday night with plenty of confidence, as they jumped out to take a 14-7 lead over North Union’s Warriors in the first quarter of play.
Good defense helped Emmetsburg take the seven-point advantage into the second quarter, but North Union found their legs and managed to run down the Lady E-Hawks.
The Warriors would tie the game up with just over a minute to go and then got a late bucket to take a 19-17 advantage into the locker room at the intermission.
Emmetsburg would come out in the third quarter and put up a bucket-for-bucket performance to retake a 29-26 lead into the fourth, but the Warriors would retake the lead, only to see Emmetsburg tie it up and North Union mismanage the clock in the final :06 to send the game to overtime with a 40-40 score.
In the extra period, Emmetsburg went on a 7-0 run before North Union could score, and would go on to earn the 49-40 win.
Ashton Connelly led the effort with 15 points, while Alexa Naig added 14 points and nine rebounds. Whitney Kibbie tallied 11 points, while Hadley Egland added six and Michaela Rehm chipped in three.
Advancing to meet Okoboji on Friday for the Regional semi, the Lady E-Hawks looked to avenge an earlier season loss to the Pioneers.
Okoboji took an early 9-5 lead after the first quarter and led Emmetsburg by a 21-14 tally. But in the second half, Emmetsburg found their magic once again.
The defense tightened down on Okoboji as the Lady E-Hawks began getting their shots to fall, and Emmetsburg was able to make up their seven point deficit and overtake the Pioneers to lead by a digit, 33-32, to end the third quarter.
In the final frame, the two ball clubs would trade blows like a prizefight, answering bucket for bucket as the clock wound down.
With the score knotted at 39-39 with just seconds to go, a last-second shot by the Pioneers would fall, giving Okoboji the 41-39 win, as Emmetsburg’s magical run came to a quiet end.
Ashton Connelly would lead the scoring with 20 points, as she also pulled down seven rebounds. Alexa Naig would add in 10 points in the contest, while Whitney Kibbie added five points and Hadley Egland scored four points. Michaela Rehm would hand out four assists in the contest.
The season ends with a mark of 4-19 for Emmetsburg s they bid farewell to the lone senior on the squad, Whitney Kibbie.
