Wolverines Open Season With 50-8 Blowout Win
WEST?BEND – The 2012 gridiron season got off to a quick start for West Bend-Mallard/Gilmore City-Bradgate on Friday night, Aug. 17 with a 50-8 drubbing of Northwood-Kensett.
A quick start for the Wolverines put them up 6-0 on their first possession after a sneak by quarterback Jesse Zinnel with 9:13 to play in the first quarter.
After a punt, WBM/GCB got a 38 yard dash from Jordan Buhs to paydirt and a two-point conversion from Ashton Fehr for a 16-0 lead with 7:08 to go in the first.
The purple and gold defense did its part, forcing another punt, but a fumble gave the NK?Vikings new life, and a touchdown just moments into the second quarter for a 16-8 tally.
The Wolverines would answer on the resulting possession with a 29 yard run from Buhs for the score. Davey Jergens ran in the conversion for a 22-8 lead with 9:34 remaining in the half, ending the scoring in the first half.
The second half opened with the Wolverines eating up the clock and scoring off a 70 yard drive when Nathan Grimm ran in from a yard away, but the PAT failed to make the score 28-8.
A big defensive stand by WBM/GCB stopped the Vikings at the Wolverine 30 and it didn’t take long to capitalize on the possession. After some quick runs, Jesse Zinnel placed a ball in Davey Jergens’ hands for a key first down and Jergens finished the drive with an 18 yard run for the score. Zinnel kept on the conversion to make the score 36-8.
After a three and out, WBM/GCB?got the ball back and Buhs burnt up the turf with a 56 yard blast into the end zone, but the PAT?failed for a 42-8 tally to end the third frame.
In the final stanza the Wolverines had a scoring drive stopped off an interception, but would get the final score off a four-yard run by Tyler McKinney, who would add his own conversion for the 50-8 final as the continuous clock ended the game early.
The Wolverines tallied 442 yards of total offense while holding the Vikings to just 132 total yards. WBM/GCB had 48 carries for 383 yards, with Jordan Buhs rushing 11 times for 126 yards. Davey Jergens had five rushes for 94 yards and Jesse Zinnel carried 13 times for 77 yards.
In the air, Jesse Zinnel made five of 10 passes for 59 yards with one pick. Jason Zinnel would make two catches for the Wolverines.
The Wolverines take to the highway this Friday evening as they visit the Rockets of Remsen Union in Remsen.
