Black Shirts Prevail In E-Hawk Varsity Scrimmage
by Dan Voigt
The popping of pads on Friday night signaled the start of the gridiron campaign for another season at Emmetsburg. The annual sports drink scrimmage on Aug. 17 saw the Black squad earn an 8-0 decision over the White squad in the E-Hawk Varsity scrimmage at Duane Twait Field.
The two squads traded possessions in the first quarter of action, with the Black squad getting the first crack on the offense. Under the guidance of senior quarterback Jake Jackson, the black squad worked its way downfield with hard running from Austin McCartan and Cody Henderson, but the drive would stall out at the White team two-yard line off a solid defensive play by Brandon Elbert in knocking a pass in the end zone away from Brady Christensen.
The White team, under the guidance of Elbert, the junior quarterback, took over and started their march down field, using the punishing runs of Andrew Wellik and Mitch Petersen,
The White squad drove to the Black 25 yard line, but turned the ball over on downs with :32 to go in the quarter.
The Black squad took over but stalled, resulting in a 41-yard punt by Jake Jackson that the White squad got at their 24 yard stripe.
Again, the White team drove down field, but were also forced to punt, giing the black shirts the ball at their 20 yard line.
With 7:17 on the clock, Jackson fell back to pass but was flushed from the pocket and scrambled to his right. As he scrambled, he spotted Austin McCartan streaking down the sideline and let fly with a 71-yard bomb that McCartan hauled in to land in the end zone for the score.
On the conversion try, a bad snap to Jackson prompted him to tuck the bal in and run for the end zone to earn the two-point conversion for the 8-0 tally.
The White team would get the ball back and drove quickly downfield, only to fumble the ball at the Black 34-yard line, but recovered their own fumble to stay alive. But, with time running down, a last-ditch pass from Elbert to th end zone was picked off at the Black two-yard line by Cody Henderson to end the scrimmage with :02 on the clock for the Black shirt victory.
The E-Hawk freshmen squad also scrimmaged, with solid running efforts from Brian Wickman and Wesley Schultes in their scrimmage.
The Emmetsburg Sophomores got tough running from Greg Wesley and Jacob Kibbie in their scrimmage as well.
The regular season for Emmetsburg begins this Friday evening, Aug. 24, at Dale Norton Field in Spencer against the Tigers. Game time is 7 p.m.
