By Staff | Jul 17, 2012

While Summer might not seem like prime wrestling time, nine Emmetsburg E-Hawk wrestlers made the trek from Emmetsburg to Stillwater, OK in mid-June. The E-Hawk wrestlers along with Coach Jared Pickett had an opportunity to learn technique from John Smith, the current head coach of the Oklahoma State University Cowboys. Smith, a two-time Olympic wrestling champion, headed up the camp along with several OSU?coaching staff members and current OSU?Cowboy wrestlers.

The E-Hawks made the trip along with several wrestlers from Sergeant Bluff-Luton, Kingsley-Pierson, Hinton, and Cherokee. The Northwest Iowa contingent was able to make three teams: The Iowa Hawks, Iowa Clones, and Iowa Panthers during the camp sessions in Stillwater.

The three teams dualed 21 other high school teams from Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, Utah, Nebraska, Kansas, Florida, Louisiana, Colorado, and Missouri during the camp.

Team Iowa Hawks had an outstanding tournament and finished in third place with a 12-1 record, with its only loss coming at the hands of the eventual champion squad.
