E-Hawks Struggle In Pair Of League Setbacks

By Staff | Jul 3, 2012

Back-to-back losses for Emmetsburg at midweek dropped the E-Hawks to a 9-13 mark overall and 4-8 in league play after setbacks at the hands of Cherokee on Wednesday and Spencer on Thursday.

Against the Braves on Wednesday, Emmetsburg committed seven errors in an 11-10 loss. The game saw the E-Hawks fall behind 1-0 after the top of the first, but it didn’t take long for things to change. Five base hits for the E-Hawks in the bottom of the second would score three earned runs and two more would score for a 5-1 advantage.

Cherokee added a run in the third and two in the fourth before scoring three runs in the top of the fifth for a 7-5 advantage as Emmetsburg would strand a runner in each inning to end five innings of play.

In the top of the sixth, the Braves pushed four runs over the plate for an 11-5 advantage over the E-Hawks, using four errors to their advantage along with a walk and a base hit.

Emmetsburg would answer with five runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the score 11-10.

In the final inning, both teams left two runners stranded to end the ballgame.

For the E-Hawks, Brady Berkland had a double and two singles, while Jake Carlson added two singles. Taylor Wegner, Joe Jackson, Greg Wesley, Luke Jackson and Aaron Bird all added hits to the effort.

Turning around on Thursday night, the E-Hawks played host to Spencer in a make up game from June 20. The Tigers took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off an error and a single before being retired. The E-Hawks would strand Brady Berkland and Jake Carlson on base when the inning ended with the E-Hawks trailing 1-0.

Spencer would draw a walk and turned it into a run off a single in the top of the second for a 2-0 lead. Emmetsburg would go down in order in their half of the inning, however.

In the top of the third, the Tigers got on base off an error and a base hit, but left their runners stranded. The E-Hawks would get Berkland on base after he was hit by a pitch, but the senior was left waiting at second when the inning ended.

With a 2-0 lead to start the fourth, Spencer came up with a double and a pair of singles to plate another run for a 3-0 advantage over the E-Hawks. But in the bottom of the frame, Emmetsburg answered with Taylor Wegner getting on base off an error and Greg Wesley nailing a single to score Wegner. Wesley would come home off Luke Jackson’s sac fly to make the score 3-2 at the end of four complete.

Emmetsburg’s defense retired the Tigers in order in the top of the fifth, but Emmetsburg suffered a similar fate. In the top of the sixth, Spencer got a lead off walk that would score off an error, walk and sac fly for a 4-2 lead. The E-Hawks would get Greg Wesley on base off a fielders’ choice, but left him waiting to end the at-bat.

In the seventh, the Tigers’ leadoff batter was hit by a pitch and would come home to score off a double for a 5-2 lead. Emmetsburg would load the bases off three walks as Luke Jackson, Jacob Kibbie and Brady Berkland all got free passes, but none would find the ticket home as the game ended with a strikeout.

Jake Jackson got the loss, giving up five runs, all earned, off eight hits with four walks and six strikeouts.

The E-Hawks got just two hits in the loss as Jake Carlson and Greg Wesley both had singles in the loss.
