E-Hawks Blanked By LeMars On Thursday

After a night off due to heavy rains on Wednesday, Emmetsburg’s E-Hawks couldn’t get on track Thursday in an 11-0 loss to LeMars in five innings. The loss drops the E-Hawks to 8-11 on the season and 3-6 in Lakes Conference play as the final weeks of the regular season approach.

The visiting Bulldogs got out to an early start on Thursday by plating two runs in the top of the first before the E-Hawks made the defensive stop. Emmetsburg would come up in the bottom of the inning and get a lead-off single from Brady Berkland, only to leave him waiting ast second after a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Kliegl and a strikeout and put out to end the inning.

LeMars would Go down in order in the second, despite a walk that would become the final out on a pickoff play. The E-hawks would also go down in order to end the second frame.

In the third, LeMars uncorked the bottle to score three runs, using three singles and a double to do the damage for a 5-0 lead. Emmetsburg would be struck out in order in their at-bat to end the third.

The Bulldogs plated a sixth run in the top of the fourth inning off a two singles and a walk, while the E-Hawks were able to put Jake Jackson on base after he was hit by a pitch, but left him waiting when the inning ended.

In the top of the fifth inning, LeMars put the game out of reach. A pair of base hits and a double would be combined with two walks and an error to plate five runs before Emmetsburg’s defense came to bear.

The E-Hawks hoped for a magic rally as they stepped to the plate in the bottom of the fifth frame, but a strikeout, a fly ball to second base and a put out at first would end the game by the 10-run rule in the loss for Emmetsburg.

Ryan Kliegl would pitch one inning, facing six batters and surrendering two runs, both earned, off three hits. Jake Carlson came in to relieve to start the second inning and pitched four innings, facing 26 batters and allowing nine runs, six earned, off eight hits with four walks and two strikeouts.

Emmetsburg’s lone hit came from Brady Berkland in the opening inning.

The E-Hawks returned to Lakes play Monday night at Western Christian and then travel to Manson tonight (Tuesday)?for a varsity-only contest. On Wednesday, June 27, Emmetsburg will host Cherokee in conference play, and will then make-up their game with Spencer on Thursday, June 28, before hosting Estherville Lincoln Central on Friday, June 29, to close out the week.
