Emmetsburg Breaks Slump With Win Over Algona

By Staff | Jun 21, 2012

It tooks some doing on Tuesday night but Emmetsburg’s Lady E-Hawks broke a four-game losing slump with a 4-0 victory over Algona. The win moves the Lady E-Hawks to 17-8 on the season overall.

For five innings on Tuesday night, the Bulldogs of Algona and the Lady E-Hawks traded outs and the occasional baserunner in a defensive battle. Algona went down in order in the first and Emmetsburg stranded Faith Schmidt in the bottom of the frame.

In the second, Algona got a double but left their runner waiting at second on strikeouts. Emmetsburg would go down in order in the second as the game moved quickly.

Algona would get a leadoff single in the top of the third, but a fielders’ choice took the leadoff runner and the Emmetsburg defense stepped up for the stop. Emmetsburg would get Whitney Kibbie on base off an error with one out, but a fly ball by Aly Berven turned into a double play as Kibbie was caught off the bag to end the inning.

In the fourth, Emmetsburg pitcher Faith Schmidt struck the Bulldogs out in order, but Emmetsburg would come back in their half of the inning with back-to-back singles from Miranda Vlasman and Jacque Carlson with two outs, but the baserunners were left looking for a way home when the inning ended.

Another three strikeouts retired the Bulldogs in the top of the fifth frame and Emmetsburg came back up to bat. With one out, Teegan Olson drew a walk, but she would be left waiting at second as the at-bat ended.

With a scoreless game to start the sixth, Algona would go down in order again, despite a booming shot to the left field fence that was snagged by left fielder Kaity Degen for the second out.

In the bottom of the sixth, Degen led off being put out and Schmidt hit a line shot to third for two outs. But Miranda Vlasman cracked off a double to left center and Jacque Carlson got on base off an error that would allow courtesy runner Kendall Deitering to plate the first run of the game.

With a 1-0 lead, Emmetsburg got a single from Hannah VanOosbree and an error on Michaela Rehm’s at-bat loaded the sacks before Teegan Olson smacked a single that would allow the three runs to score off a passed ball situation. Whitney Kibbie would be walked as Olson waited at third off the previous passed ball, but Aly Berven would fly out to end the inning as Emmetsburg batted through the order.

Algona’s final hope came down to a strikeout, followed by a walk in the top of the seventh, but Schmidt would end the game with a swinging strikeout and a called strikeout for the much-needed win.

Faith Schmidt would get the win, giving up just two hits, with one walk and 13 strikeouts in seven innings of work in the circle.

Miranda Vlasman tallied a double and single, while Faith Schmidt, Jacque Carlson, Hannah VanOosbree and Teegan Olson all added singles to the cause.
